We have a smart car that we tow on a trailer. Just done 3 weeks in europe (1st timers) and was advised beforehand that in certain countries it is against the law for cars to be towed on an a-frame. Thats why we went for the trailer option but having gone through Belgium, Holland, Germany, Luxembourg and France we saw plenty of a-frames. In fact our outfit was unique. So it begs the question of the legality of the a-frame? or is/has our naivity increased our overall expenditure.

We tow one of these. Bit of a job fitting the A frame but only 820kg so worth spending the time!

Hi Graham,

We went for a new VW Polo 1.4 tdi with air con. 1100 kg, 3 cylinder and 60 - 65 mpg combined use with plenty of power even with 4 onboard going up hill. Also £35 tax but not yet seen anyone else towing one.

Regards

Roger

Hi Chris,

Can you tow an automatic? I did'nt think this was possible if it is very useful information.

Thanks,

Graham

Some you can, some you cannot. Do your research first. We were told by Honda dealer we could tow a Jazz with CVT. Honda said NO, AFTER we bought the car. It went back after a week.
Smart, also said NO, BUT they were wrong, you can and we did.
Toyota, Citroen and Peugeot say YES for their CVT versions.
Good Luck and don't believe everything you are told. Try and find someone who actually tows the car you want. If that fails ask the manufacturer and if they say yes, get it in writing.

Thanks Denis,

This is one reason why I started the topic. It is very useful to know what others do and why and how etc.
