The cheapest UK SIM to use abroad is Go Global but you can but you can buy the SIM cheaper by going though www.mobilephonesim.com this will give you £5 discount
It is FREE to receive calls in the EUROPE and up to a total of 90 countries plus the making of calls is much cheaper have a look at the rate calculator on the site

Hi I use vodafone with passport, I thought my calls in Portugal, France adn Spain where covered, unfortunately some call I made were £5, and £7, I was within my minutes. I think it was that I could not get on preferred network, my phone didnt give me the option to change.

Once we start travelling for longer periods I will look into these roaming sims.

When abroad, using a UK sim to phone a local number - i.e. while in Italy to phone an italian number using a UK phone, do you have to use the international code?

We have just got a sim4travel to use for our 6 month trip. It has got to be cheaper than vodaphone passport.
