I use an Archos with an 80 gig hard drive to store and play films which just plugs into the tv and is much better than having to take loads of dvd's with you.
Now that is a brilliant idea. It's amazing just how much room the humble DVD takes up and we've just started stocking up for The Grand Tour.
Do you rip them at full resolution or reduce it to suit a 10" display or does the Archos software take care of this. How many films or hours can you fit on it ?
Thinks...... Ours will take a USB stick, a 500G USB HD costs nothing today, now that's worth testing !!
How would you access and control an HDD from the tv? Would that not be a problem?

shouldn't be, Brian.. Mine goes : dish to box to tv card. (in a pc, not lappy)

There *is* the problem. PC plugins are big so they have room for video/audio in connector but off hand I don't know a combined receiver and video dongle for a laptop, which doesn't mean there aren't any.

From experience I have found 7 / 8" models just a bit to small to see...
We used to have a Trigano and even though that was not a big van, trying to watch a 7" screen was not comfortable...
10" I think would be minimum... There are some great deals now coming out on 15", yes they are bigger but being flat screen a lot easier to store that the old glass tubes..
Have a look here.. 15" with freeview £99..

This looks good - does it run from 12V?

I looked at tihs TV in our local branch of 'T.J.Hughes' . . . it comes with 12v adapter & takes 4amps, has built in Freeview & DVD player, I'm considering getting one

USB Hard Drive has failed - I suspect it can't cope with the big directory on it. It tries but the screen just keeps flickering STOP/Read USB

Mine is an older AV300 which also has an attachment to record your own video or take single pictures. It also plays mp3 as well. Got mine off Ebay.
I think the new ones come with a remote control and Wifi.
I use this program

to convert it to my Archos and it then plays on any size screen.

I'm getting myself confused now ( and downloading your suggested rip program at the same time, thanks ).
I have an old HP laptop for the MH with an excellent 14" screen. So the options are:
Archos type device to 10.4" screen conveniently mounted with good sound.
Laptop with 14" screen, not conveniently mounted, I suppose I could use the same speakers for good sound.
Or even laptop to 10" screen and then throw the laptop on the bed so we don't need table up ( and before anyone screams COOLING, the laptop would be placed on something smooth ). That's not good, can't control it if not to hand.
So many choices - or we could just get legless every night.

The program I suggested is for many different players including pc monitors and laptops. It does not rip the DVD it merely converts it to the player of your choice and puts the lips in sync so you would need to rip it to Divx first. You could convert it to run on your laptop direct if its up to it. I did use my laptop for films but it takes more power than the archos
