That's a good test. Don't agree we are straying off the point. We are telling the original poster that AVG 8 is good and that he should install a firewall and ignore some of the earlier threads saying one is unnecessary if you use a laptop at WIFI locations.

I've just checked mine at the 'ShieldUp' web site and I am told that it doesn't recognise that I have a computer-what a relief!!!!

OK, for clarification:

You should have a firewall installed (zonealarm etc) and not just reliant on your router/windows firewall.

Hi Griff,

Doesn't one firewall conflict with another? I have previously been advised only to install one firewall, for that very reason.

I had a confident result, when trying out the "Shield Up" test on the laptop. Although it did pick up my 3 Dongle ISP address, it couldn't infiltrate any of the ports, as they are all locked up, and in stealth mode!!!
Not sure what exactly it meant in great detail, but it all sounded very secure. I bet the home PC would fail the same test miserably

Jock.

Sorry to resurrect this thread but it's now my turn to put some protection on my new Dell laptop (Vista).

Previous posts on this thread and others talk about a free download of both AVG and Zone Alarm.

The only free AVG download I can find is for 30 days only.
The only Zone Alarm download I can find is charged and requires re subscription every year.

I'm quite happy to pay for the goods but if there are free versions available I'd be quite happy to take up those offers.

I'm not a "google expert" so may well be looking in the wrong place.

Some pointers would be appreciated.
