Is it possible to tour Austria in an 8.5 metre M/H without a Go Box, and without using M/ways or express-ways. Once abroard I am never in a rush so time is not an issue. (have done Lagos Portugal to Calais toll free). My understanding of the Austrian Go Box system is that it is only applicable to the type of roads previously mentioned. My only fear is inadvertantly entering a toll road without the dreaded box.

I wouldn't like to say its impossible, but we found it extremely difficult.
We had a Go-Box and tried, where possible, to avoid the toll roads using the Tomtom. Unfortunately it seems as if existing toll free roads are being added to the toll system.
We were told that they are trying to keep the eastern european trucks from using Austria as a rat-run. So i would expect that they will eventually "Toll" any road that you can drive a large truck on.
We were talking to a few campsite owners who were not happy that leisure vehicles were being charged as well.
It will cost you 16 cents per km on toll roads. Apparently the 80 euro that you hand over for the Go-Box is just enough to get you through Austria to either Italy or Slovenia
I am going to email their tourist board with regards to these charges. I meant to speak to their representative at the Dusseldorf show, but went for a beer instead

The vignet is only for the autobahns.

The vignet is only for vehicles under 3.5t. Over this weight you need the Go-box, and the charges are dependant on how many axles you have. They really sting you if you have a 6 legger

That's why you see plenty of articulated trucks getting on the train in the Brenner Pass to transit through to Germany.
I'm lucky I only need a vignette, but I thought it a rip off to be charged an additional 8.00 euro's to use the Austrian section of the Brenner Pass.
Even going to Slovenia via Tauern Motorway (A10 / E 55) will cost 19.50 euro to go through the Tauern Tunnel, Katschberg Tunnel, Karawanken Tunnel.
I think the Go box idea is a very good practical way of raising revenue for Austria, and should in my opinion be used on commercial vehicles across the whole of Europe to get the bulk of heavy freight back onto the railways. It should NOT be used on leisure vehicles that in many cases are not just transiting the country but staying and adding to the local economy.

I agree 100% with that statement and i expect that so do the Austrian Tourist Office

Sorry Zozzer, but I have to disagree with you. It is entirely impractical to put "the bulk of heavy freight back onto the railways. " as there simply is not enough capacity (never mind the service levels on rail fright).
One of the biggest challenges the logistics industry faces is to make the general public appreciate the necessity of freight transport. You stated that the various tolls you paid to go to slovenia amount to 19.5 euro and 8 euro for the brenner. That doesn't seem unreasonable to me.
As traffic volumes increase across euroland, there will be increased use of smart tolling systems in an attempt to reduce the amount of non-essential travel. This will ultimately affect all vehicles at various charging levels including time of day and level of congestion on the route being used.
Whilst a system of tolling for trucks may seem attractive, the net result is that everyone will pay through higher prices in the shops for the everyday goods we all buy. I'm sure you're not suggesting that the entire population should subsidise our free use of the roads!
I'm not having a pop at you directly, more at the general perception that trucks are bad and should be taken off the road. There are numerous posts on this forum praising companies excellent service in getting mail order goods delivered quickly, often inside 24 hours. This is a function of efficient road freight transport and such service levels would be impossible using a rail based infrastructure.
I'm going skiing with the kids at Christmas, and the lift passes are over 700 euros - tht's just the cost to use the infrastructure!
