hi to all those in the know,

this is to do with the house as opposed to the 'van Smile i have run a new cable from the aeriel to the tv and have an excellent picture. the problem is that when i connected it to the socket in the wall, new, as OH fed up with hole in wall Laughing the picture quality was poorer. the socket in the wall is shielded and the same cable used to connect to tv. there are no loose connections and the outer thin wires are nowhere near inner core. all ideas and help greatly appreciated. btw there is no freeview, don't get ch5 here.

cheers
simon

I had a similar problem with my Sky picture. I had wired it through a socket and the picture was awful. I was told that there is some sort of 'condenser'in the socket, probably the wrong word but I am sure you will understand what I am trying to say, and this upset the flow along the wire.

Told to drill through the aerial socket andbring the wire through the hole straight to the socked on the TV. Did that and it worked fine. Hope that may help with your problem.

thanks javea,

unfortunately still using video and therefore lead neads to be taken to that when used. not used at all times as picture quality even worse when it is put through the video. i do realise it should boost it but doesn't.

Can you explain what you want to acheive? What does the wall socket do?
What are you doing with the video? Do you have a Sky box?
My Sky Lead and aerial lead goes straight ito the Sky Box and the upfeed comes from the RF2 socket on the Sky Box which is amplified

I am confuse as well. When we fed the analogue signal through the old video recorder we got a better signal than direct connection to aerial.
Don't do it now since TV is digital and we feed from TV Scart to Video if required.
If you have fitted a wall outlet socket then, unless it is a real cheapo, there should be no loss ( or undetectable loss ) through it. You have a cable fault somewhere or a faulty outlet.
We have :- Roof aerial to wall outlet cable - wall outlet to TV (or video in past) and no loss.

I assume that you are talking about a standard analogue TV picture. If so, the first thing to do is check the picture quality from the aerial cable direct into the TV. You say that this is good when connected directly, but reduces when connected from the new socket. That would suggest that there is a breakdown in the shelding of the socket or you have possibly bridged the shielding on the cable. If you are making all of the cables, have you checked with a proprietary cable? Is there any electrical equipment near the socket? Are there any speakers near the socket or cable?
Next the VCR, leave the aerial input cable to the VCR unplugged for now, but connect the aerial cable from the VCR to the TV How is the picture quality when you play back a video using just the aerial cable to the TV?. If you cannot see the picture then your TV needs retuning to the VCR. If the picture quality is OK on video playback through the aerial cabe, Connect the main aerial cable to the input on the VCR and try the TV channels from the VCR. They should be as good as the video playback, If they are not then there may be an issue with the VCR.
Now look again at the analogue channels on the TV, if they are still poor, then the issue is within the new cable or the VCR.
I understand you cannot get channel 5, but have you tried Freeview? Many people find that it is the only way that they can get channel 5. Check your postcode on www.digitaluk.co.uk for the latest forecast. If you check the box that says you are an aerial installer, you will be able to see the rollout of digital switchover for your address.
If you are still having problems, send a pm with your phone number and I shall try to assist.
Gerry
