We've just returned from our one week holiday in the eastern part of Germany, thought it would be good spend a night in the Holland region of The Nederlands at Oudorp and return via Zeeland and the Westerschelde tunnel, west of Antwerp.

This was a bad mistake, and left both my wife and I feeling bitter that we had be ripped off by the dutch. Irrespective of size, a Motorhome is charged 16.80euro, whilst a car and caravan combination pays only 6.80euro.

Having a SMALL Peugot boxer Autosleeper Symbol at less than 3500kg. I do feel extreemely angry, the toll cannot be justified in vehicle size, weight, or the number of axles of the vehicle, when compared to some car /4x4/ caravan combinations.

To be honest, both my wife and I have decide never to spend as much as 0,01cent in The Netherlands ever agian. We will only ever transit through on the motorways to countries whose GDP isn't subsidised by ripping off tourist.

Yes, ANGRY, very Angry

Many yachtsmen have complained about the cost of transiting the Crinan canal - as a lock keeper once said, you can always go round the Mull.
Same goes for any tunnel in the Netherlands. If you don't like it , go round it!
Tolls are everywhere but none are 'sprung' on you. Plot a route to avoid them if you can't afford them.

Hi

We went through that tunnel a few weeks ago...and was shocked by the toll. The dutch aren't too happy about it either, especially those that live in the area. We always have the option of avoiding the area, unlike the locals

We just put it down to experience....and i have to say, it is a nice tunnel. Holland is a nice country and full of nice people, i certainly wouldn't let a bad toll experience stop me from returning

Hi Trev

Only if you are going up/down the Dutch coast.

Our TomTom did ask if we wanted to avoid the toll...i just thought it would only be a few euros Shocked

I do have to say that the tunnel was smooth...really smooth. the road surface was like a billiard table.

Yes, I thought exactly the same, just a few euro's. I expected about eight.
But to be given no warning of the price or opportunity to turn around and go via a different route when finally confronted with the actual cost is blatantly wrong. This 16.80euro is aimed at commericial vehicles who can offset the cost in the rates they charge for transporting goods, or passengers travelling by coach.

Yes, the road may be as smooth as a babies backside but I would sooner endure that Belgian bone shaking ride from Ypres to the motorway than be fleeced by the Dutch.

Hi,

Dutch motorhome clubs have already heavily complained against the pricing policy of the Westerschelde tunnel. But, to no effect at all.

So, they have advised their members - and non members with motorhomes - to strictly avoid the tunnel until the policy changes. Unfortunately this requires a detour around Antwerp, and here the east side because the Liefkenshoektunnel on the west side of Antwerp has a similar price for MHs.

The ferry between Breskens an Vlissingen does not transport cars anymore, since the opening of the Westerscheldetunnel.

Best Regards,
Gerhard
