Just used mine last week in Germany to download 12 emails - cost me £31:22 for the pleasure and thats on top of the £10 month charge. I think its yet another rip-off

Might try the colander trick, are you sure this is serious?

Yes it is serious ...in as much as it works for me at home where the signal is marginal.
But I am beginning to think that there are other factors which affect the connection that I get in different locations. for example last weekend we at the Brean rally ... the dongle connected OK and showed a reasonable signal but the data transfer was really slow and variable... I tried the colander and it raised the signal level to good but the download rate was still poor. So I am pretty sure that the contention ratio of the transmitter is coming into play.
If you are wondering what is "contention ratio" then it is sharing. The "contention ratio" is the number of other people you have to share the connection infrastructure with. In a wired connection a contention ratio of 50:1 would mean that the maximum number of people you could be sharing the connection with at anytime is 49 other people. If all 50 people were downloading at the same time then your download speed will be poor. Does this affect the mobile connections too? I am sure it must.
The trouble is that these dongles are getting more and more popular... so does that mean they will get slower and slower? Any one out there who knows the answer?
Used our s very successfully in Sardinia and west coast of Italy. V cheap as 3 have a link with an italian network so £10 a month as in UK. Also used in Lauterbrunnen and Rhine Gorge on way back. Working v well as I write this on Hayling Island.

I have Vodafone mobile broadband for £15 pm and it works wherever I can get a signal. At 54Mbps it is fast enough to download everything I need. Very easy to use too!
