Do'nt know about your particular tv but recently some freeview update downloads have caused this problem making some of the older freeview receivers useless you could try the manufacturer to see if this is repairable try this website for more info

This is where an unofficial website can be a dangerous source of information. The only units that have been affected by the NIT change are some units that were in production before 2002, and even then very few of them. It has not affected any flat panel IDTV. Most of the affected boxes are old ON Digital or ITV Digital boxes. And even those affected will still receive all public service broadcasts.
The change that may stop some Freeview receivers will be the 2k/8k change, which will first be noticed at Granada switchover from November 2009. Even this will not affect any flat panel TVs and will not affect any unit that is Digital Tick approved.

Your information is correct, although somewhat out of date. All of the Sony models have been updated as have the Ferguson/Grundig/Thomson set top boxes. The Sagems were updated last week and most of the others have over air downloads booked for the next few weeks. I only have sight of the schedules up to two weeks in advance.
The Thomson Top-Up PVR is not affected.
However, this does not assist the initial question, which is definitely either a signal strength or tuning issue.

you could try a freeview box on the aerial,if you can borrow one or buy a box from somewhere like ASDA , connect via a scart lead assuming the set has a scart socket, if that one does'nt work take it back they should get your money back and you can buy a new aerial or go for freesat

To sum up my thoughts to date:
It looks like my ariel is a bit rubbish
Freeview is a bit rubbish, variable in quality and needs a directional ariel
Free to Air satellite seems to offer a good possibilty for my purely uk holidays.
However that requires a satellite ariel and satellite receiver. I have looked at the mobile systems. They have issues such as the space to be occupied in my little motorhome and that the fact that we will probably be moving sites frequently during our trips out gives them minus points.
So the big decision is should I go for a Camos crank up dish to fit in where the existing ariel is with a Zhender receiver? More expensive than intended but a good quality system that is easy to us and takes up little space.
Any thoughts out there? Alternative suggestions?
