We have just taken our bikes away for the first time and although it was great to have them with us, we found the bike rack a bit of a pain.

1). We have a rear lounge and even without the cover, the rear view was quite obscured (both for driving and relaxing). We decided we wouldn't put the cover on when were parked up as it made the motorhome too dark. When we put it on to travel, we may as well have shut the blinds as we had no rear vision whatsoever.

2). Our bikes are quite heavy and it's quite an effort getting them up onto the rack. We are thinking of getting a new motorhome and it will probably be our last, so we are thinking about when we are older and less able. We may even buy power assisted bikes which would be even heavier.

What we are looking for a low rack as used for motorbikes. Is there anything around for cycles?

Cheers

MOB2

If you can have a towball fitted this will solve your problem. Our bikes sit on a Thule towball mounted rack underneath the rear window.

Hi Mob2

Yes, there is. You can either go for one which fits onto a towbar (which means you'll need a towbar fitted, of course), or you can get ones that lift up and down.

is the lifty-up-and-down one.

I'm sure there's posts with many of the other types and makes somewhere in this forum (Parts and accessories : Cycle Racks).

Cycle racks are usually motorhome specific so that they will marry up to the built in anchorage points.

Alternatively you would need a tow bar mounted system with the added expense of having a towbar fitted.

Wizzo has the answer.

The Thule towball mounted one is very quick and convenient, and utterly bombproof.

I wouldn't consider another make having used the Thule.

hi
we carry our bikes (2) on a rack that attaches to our tow bar. It can carry up to 3 bikes and is complete with light board. It is a Thule, and because it is removable it can be used on our car too.

We saw one of these on a Finnish van in Croatia last year. The only one we've seen and it looked sooooo.... easy that it was love at first sight ! We'd definately have one if we bought another MH.

Winding the rack up and down was done with a handle very similar to the Fiamma handle used for the awning but it was all so smooth and effortless and the bikes start off from ground level.
