This is a first post so a big wave to you all.
Bought a Fiat Ducato 1.9td in Germany recently, low miles 57k for a 1991.
After a 1000 kilometers just short of home the engine decided to make a large clunking as though the bigends had gone. After a flat bed lift back home, the purchase of a crane and the removal and dismantling of the engine, I found the crank broke in two. The first thought is that I got ripped off! But looking at the rubber hose at the top of the engine behind the injector pump, which connects to the suction pipe in the sump. I noticed that it had a hole, this I surmise would have stopped the oil circulating and before you know it, a broken crankshaft. I noticed when this happened that there was a pool of oil under this area. ~# So if you have one of these engines, make sure you check that pipe #

My problem now is that I can get a new crankshaft from Germany for £400 with new shells and shipping. But I am thinking of changing to a Peugeot engine.
The question is does anyone know if I change the engine and possibly the gear box will it work for the 1.9td Peugeot replacing the Fiat 1.9td? The only thing that looks different seems to be the engine mounts. Would they swap over? Or putting in a 2.5td?
Finding parts for this engine 280A1.000 in the UK is not easy as it was never used here.
So please give me your ideas and comments, I could get a new short block for the Fiat, but they want £1300 plus exchange from Germany and as mine is broke they may want more.
If anyone knows of suppliers in Germany who are trust worthy with a great price please let me know (not that the Germans are not trust worthy).

HI,
Can't help with the technical stuff but I have used this company www.axel-augustin.de for spare parts and they are fantastic.
They even went off and purchased a second hand speedo for me when they couldn't get it new from Fiat.
Try them their service is excellent.

Hi Atma

Welcome to the site and sorry to hear your tale of woe - it happens to us all occasionally , usually at the least convenient time.

In view of the age of the van, my approach would be to try and obtain a used replacement engine & box, preferably a 2.5. There seems to be a lack of knowledge as to compatibility on these vans so the difficulty is finding someone who can advise you as to what will fit, then look around the dismantlers for a suitable engine & box. I suggest contacting one of the specialist van dismantlers first as they should know about compatibility, perhaps

might be a useful first stop. Once you know what you can fit then look around the dismantlers, I know that one local yard to me has at least three fiat/peugeot vans in amongst the cars being broken so there are some about.
Good luck - and let us know how you get on as power unit compatibility is useful knowledge to share.

Thank you Merpb and Gaspode for your input.
Just went to the Axel site and it looks as if I went down the road of changing the Kubwelle/crankshaft they may be able to save me £70. off the £400
I will try the United vans tomorrow although I have emailed them.
I would really prefer just to get a 2.5td recon it a bit and put it in but that seems to be very vague at the moment. As you were saying Gaspode there is a lack of knowledge on changing engines on the Fiat Ducato. The one's sold in the UK seem to have a variety of Citroen C25, Peugeot J5 and the Fiat. The manual I have by Peter Russek, does not make it clear on the engine mounts but everything else seems to be the same. I am sure if I went down the 2.5 road I would need to change the gearbox as well.
Thanks for the input Very Happy
