Not being the brightest button when it comes to Sat systems, what is the latest situation on reception in Portugal please?
As we seem to be spending more time in this delightful (sometimes) banana republic we call home I thought we ought to get a system set up
I was told I need a huge dish because the footprint had been reduced, but is this still true?... if it ever was.
We are about 20 miles from both south & west coasts if that makes any difference.

I was away when LIDL did their 12volt sat system, & just missed the latest offer also... Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad ..................... I think they should have a pecking order, long standing customers first Wink

TIA

According to the charts there isn't a cat in hells chance of getting the Astra narrow beam in Portugal. However charts aren't always right and earlier this year we got good reception in Northern Italy (also well off the chart) using the Lidl receiver and a normal Sky minidish! It shouldn't be possible but it is sometimes under the right conditions. You should be able to get the Astra south beam OK which will at least give you a UK news service.

Hi Hedge

Whilst no expert I have for the past two years got all free to air programs BBC 1 etc with a 90cm dish. Most Brits "wintering" on the Algarve seem to buy a 1.2m dish and then get nearly all the normal sky output. These dishes are not that expensive in Portugal, a coupe of places in Olhao sell them for about 130 euro will even install them on site for you.

Anything smaller than 90cm and you will struggle to receive anything other than sky news.

regards
Heman[

Thxs guys. I will have to do more 'research' . I didn't even know there were two (or more?) Astra beams....... Yet another new learning curve.

Still, I did manage to watch the last day of the 5th test at a neighbours. Smile

Incedentally the easiest way to get a system is to go to the freesat website,

purchase the system including the viewing card.for £150, after it is installed at your home, unbolt it all and fit it in your motorhome. This will give you all the free to view channels on their website. How far south in Europe is another matter (all the channels in the south west of France, but getting poorer in the south east using the standard Sky dish and Amstrad DRX400 digibox.
The coverage maps are here, but as you know from others this varies a lot.
