Recently bought a new Hobby 725 with Ducato 2.8 jtd engine. I understand that there is tow levels of tuning for the engine i.e 127 HP and 146HP. Does anybody no what the mechanical difference is and can it be retro fitted.

Manny thanks

Hi andyx.

The 127BHP is the engine in standard form for the 2.8 jtd, there are power chips that can be fitted to boost the BHP up to 156Bhp. I do not know a lot more about this. There are a few adverts in the MMM or Practical Motorhome about re chipping. Also try one of the search engines type in power chips for diesels. Someone with more knowledge about this will be along soon.

The Fiat 2.8 jtd Power Engine(146bhp), has a new variable turbo, a different ecu and a bigger inter cooler ( also produces max torque at lower rpm -1500)- cost of these parts to upgrade around 2500 euros !.

We were chatting to the Fiat chap at the dusseldorf show - and he said the 2.3 jtd engine is the only one that will be carried over to the new 2006 ducato.

cheers

One is tempted to believe it is only a 'chip' change, but, like the automatic, the 146hp version has only been made available in LHD form by Fiat - so there may be some mechanical change which is not easy to replicate in RHD format.

I understand the more powerful Fiat engine is indeed quite different and upgrades are not on.

However, such power and torque improvements, and more, are available by chipping. I can vouch for the van Aaken smartbox:

Staggered to hear 2.3 only for 2006 Ducato.
Edit - probably read earlier comment the wrong way; should have been "expect all new 2.8?"

Suspect the engine choices in the newer models will be limited by emissions regulations.

Euro IV (and Euro V) are looming!

Hi,

I already discussed this on the 2004 Dusseldorf show with a Fiat chap: The "power" engine is basically the same as the standard 2.8JTD, but with a new turbo charger and new software adapted to this charger. Also the gearbox has been adapted.

That Fiat bloke told me that upgrades are not possible.

Best Regards,
Gerhard

Clarification of my earlier post::

Fiat chap said that only the 2.3 from the current range would go into next year - there are other new engines for 2006.

The 2.3 is the first of the newer generation engines - i see for example that it holds 1.2 litres more oil than the 2.8!. - and of course it is a 16 valve unit.
