luckily I never was in that situation. But in my favourite German motorhome forums I have read reports about it. Now maybe there is a solution where you can keep your tank:
A German company named "Dr. Keddo" producing chemicals for camping and yachting purposes has a product called "Diesolan" which is exactly meant for cleaning a diesel-polluted fresh water tank. Look here and click on your favourite flag :

As said before I never was in that situation, but two blokes from the German forum reported that it really worked. Maybe you can get that stuff somewhere in UK.
Best Regards,
Gerhard

[quote:7a82f8b459="pecker"]First of all its laugh time for you lot and embarassment for me.Just picked up my P reg Hymer swing on a fiat base and managed to drive it 55 miles on what was left in the tank.Had quickly checked(very quickly) what side the filler was for when I pulled up to the pumps as I was in a rush being on nights at work(some of you are already realising what Ive done arent you)and pulled into the garage and proceeded to put £30 of deisel in.Got back in and set off and thought my gauge was faulty as it was still showing empty.(come on you must have guessed now what I had done) Yes your all right in your thought,,,this dumb new motor home user had filled the water tank ...PAUSE 2 MINS WHILE YOU STOP LAUGHING.............I can drain it easy enough but what I need to know is have I ruined the tank or is there some way of cleaning it sufficiantly to get rid of the smell of the deisel...If it is ruined any advice on the best place to purchase new one and would it be better to have it fitted under the vehicle rather than under seats to provide
more storage space...Thank you all in advance [/quote:7a82f8b459]
Hello pecker.
I wont be laughing either. Other half did it to our New Motorhome. He got out to fill it up. Kept saying he hadnt got the the right key despite my saying he had. Any other time i would have stuck to my guns and not given him the other bunch of keys we had. We always kept the keys for driving the vehicle seperate from the caravan side set of keys. He was driving the vehicle so he had to have had the right key. Now in short i had not long been out of hospital having had surgery for cancer. Arguing about a set of keys was the last thing on my mind. Any other time I would have hopped out & had a go. However I handed him the set of keys. Then he kept saying the nozzle was too big for the hole & he coudnt get it in properly. Diesel was going over the garage decks. Still he struggled then I realised what he might have had done. Poor forecourt cashiers looked in horror. Money wise in diesel we did not lose very much but a new fresh water tank cost us 250 quid & a long wait before the job was completed. Fortunately no pipework was contaminated.
Always extra careful. It wont happen again. Good luck with cleaning the tank out but I would have thought the suggestion of using Ariel or similar washing product would have caused a smell and taste problem of its own. Steam cleaner combined with that german product seems good idea. I hope it works for you.

Steve sorry not been back on this before, only remember & have tape measure to hand when its parked up at home! I did a guestimate the other day & I reckon its only about 9 inches & about halfway between the axles.
When I hit it on a speed bump last autumn I thought I'd broken it as it seemed to be leaking when I tried to put water in, later I realised it was full so it was probably overflowing!! Doh! I hadn't realised the chap I bought it off had very kindly filled it up ready to go for me!
