WE have just booked our ferry (Superfast Rosyth - Zeebrugge) for May/June and want to go to Swtzerland onto Liguria region of Italy then travel along the south of France. Any ideas, tips, campsites you can recommend would be gratefully appreciated

When in Liguria, don't go to...Camping Parco Vacanze A.I.G. Al Mare in Chiavara. Extremely unpleasent and expensive.

I'll get 'over it' one day

Make sure you go to La Spezia and visit the Cinque Terre (literally "The Five Lands") This World Heritage site is a stretch of coastline containing 5 villages, once only accessible by sea but now reached by train and connected by a cliffside path.

La Spezia is an interesting town with its own aire (if you are interested I will find the directions but aim for the docks!). The aire is run by the local camping-car club and you can get a bus outside the gate (the "aire" is more like a campsite rather than the French version) and buy combined bus and train tickets to Cinque Terre.

Im Liguria be prepared to use buses to get around rather than trying to negotiate a MH along some of the coast roads and through the villages that hug the coast. We found the bus service excellent and the information services more than anxious to get you to use them so full of deals.

You'll see much more and not be petrified that you'll go over the edge ! There are some roads so narrow that only one vehicule can use them at a time. Let the bus driver do the backing up !

It's a wonderfully scenic region and you are going at the best time.

trhanks everyone. I will pay perticular attention to the camping site you mentionned not to go to.
I will also check out la spezia, it sounds wonderful. I am planning to drive into the South of France from here. Are the main roads OK? or should I look at other routes through? is the aire you speak about safe, we normally don't attempt aires, i have a wife who is scared of her shadow! Would appreciate the info. Thanks all

Hi frankie,

If you go to Liguria, be prepared for many Aires to be 'different' to those normally encountered in France. Space is much more at a premium and many of them are tucked away in side streets at the back of towns and take some finding. I would recommend that you will find ample space at the San Remo and Imperia one's though. San Remo is a lovely old town with lots of 'faded' attraction from it's past heyday. Be aware that occasionally some private Aires will charge for individual functions such as draining (scarico) and may specify at what time of day this can be done (weird).

If this is your first visit to Italy, then be prepared for Ligurian towns to give you a real taste of Italian madness with endless scooters dashing everywhere. I love it and walk around with a silly grin on my face at the sheer madness and style of the place.

If you wish to make any progress along the coast, then use the Autostrada. The main SS1 along the coast will ensure painfully slow progress in almost every town and village although there are some beautiful clear sections of coastline.

Have fun,
Nobby
