Having just had my booking confirmed for the ferry to Holland in June, I thought that it may be prudent to find out what is required for driving in Holland & Belgium. We will also be towing a trailer with a motorcycle on board, which will be used for trips out.

Can anyone advise me what documents & other items I will be required to carry by law.

Also of course what you found useful to carry as opposed to the normal stuff used for UK touring.

Thanks in anticipation

Mark

Hi Mark,

for the van (and the bike) you have to take the same documents with you as in UK. Plus of course driving license, passport or ID. In Holland it is legally required that you always carry an official photo ID with you!

I also recommend that you ask your van insurance for a "green card", this is a multi-lingual document containing all insurance details you have to provide in the unfortunate event of an accident.

And, don't forget your wellies... Wink

Best Regards,
Gerhard

If your insurance doesn't provide FULL cover when you are in Europe (and a lot of them don't) you MUST take a green card otherwise you will only have the minimum european road traffic cover, not your normal fully comprehensive

Thanks for the tips.

Seems to be straightforward enough.

We are going to the Dutch TT, so as for the weather, every time I have seen it, it's been throwing it down.

Hope to stay at Witzommer I think its called.

The info on leads was welcome, saves buying more STUFF.

I can converse a little in Dutch/Belgian having lived in South Africa for a few years, so hope to polish up whilst there (or make a fool of myself).

Thanks again, my mind is at ease & I am just looking forward to the trip.

Remember these phrases "Kan u me helper" 'Can you help me'
"dank u vell" 'thank you very much'
A favourite food of mine apart from chips and mayonaise is Kibling mitte saus, it is bits of fish cooked in batter with mayo/tartar sauce combination.
A pleasant place to visit is Willemstad(aqn old fortified town) on the Islemeer the campsite is called Bovensluis

The car on your pic is on the wrong side of the road

Dont worry about making a fool of your self

I went over with a smattering of Spanish, Portugese, (learned in 6 months in each country
German & Italien learned from people I worked with in this country

One day ended up talking to a Spainard - married to a Dutch Lady in all six languages

I did find people were prepared to help _ correct my pronunciation and tell me the correct words to use

I have worse problems in Frace they dont speak ANY other language - even those who travel abroad - some people go to Spain for 6 months and dont seem to be able to greet people in Spanish

Hi
No-one has mentioned the obligatory Warning Triangle and Fire Extinguisher First Aid kit for Belgium. All these are a legal requirement for all vehicles. It is also a Good Idea to have a reflective vest for each passenger in the vehicle as it is rumored to become mandatory soon.
But besides that both are very nice to visit.
