Thanks for the information Gerhard and very interesting,

I was quoting from the UK Caravan Club Book, possibly the foremost authority for camping/caravanning issues in the UK. Rolling Eyes

www.caravanclub.co.uk

quote - Regulations introduced in 1999 allow motor caravans to park anywhere on the roadside unless traffic regulations are in force prohibiting parking. They may also park overnight in car parks provided there is no indication to the contrary, however, owners must use their own facilities inside their motor caravan and not set up tables, chairs etc outside and must not stay in the same place for several nights. - unquote.

I'd be grateful if there is a website link that you could provide to confirm this information?

Mit freundlichen gruessen,

pete.

Hi Pete,

1999 was the time where I was still travelling with a tent and only dreaming of a motorhome. So I did not pay too much attention to this. However I am not aware that overnight parking was illegal before 1999.

The only thing I can provide is a link to the Schleswig-Holstein "Landesnaturschutzgesetz" (Nature Protection Act), unfortunately only in German, in which paragraph 36 explicitly forbids the "usage of mobile dwellings" outside of official camp sites.

Best Regards,
Gerhard

Thanks Gerhard,

Just out of interest, I think I might contact the caravan club and ask where they got their information from.

Further to my previous email, this is the response I have received from the
German Tourist Office in London.

Dear Bernice,

Thank you for your email, I hope you are doing well? Caravans and Motorhomes
are allowed to stay put, free of charge, up to 24hrs on motorway service
stations and some road side car parks, in fact it is very popular to do so
and there are no known safety problems. In addition there are many so called
"Wohnmobil Stellplaetze" suitable for Motorhomes, these resting stations are
coin operated and have electricity, water, bins including disposable points
for wc and grey water. "Wohnmobil Stellplaetze" are mostly found around
interesting tourist locations. For further information please see our
website: http://www.germany-tourism.co.uk/pages/camping.html

With best regards

Good afternoon

Subject: Motor Caravans in Germany

I wonder if you can confirm that motor caravans are allowed to park
overnight on the roadside in Germany (unless local travel regulations
stipulate otherwise) and they are also permitted to park overnight in car
parks.

We have this information in our guide to Germany, but cannot locate the
source. Confirmation that this is correct would be very welcome.

Thank you.

Not a definitive answer as to whether it is legal or not but at least they took the time to reply.
