Hi, friend needs to run his generator whilst driving his horsebox to power fridge and other electrical. Generator is mounted externally outside of habitation area. Can he do this legally
Hi Koi! I'm sorry, I don't understand why your friend needs to do that. A caravan fridge is powered through the towcar electrics via a relay, whilst on the move.
Now, when the car stops, the fridge stops and then there might be a need for a genny.
But why should it be illegal anyway? Afterall, isn't the engine acting as a genny when on the move?

Hi unclenorm, there is the problem. The horse box has been wired ar*e about face originally. Engine charges traction battery. Generator charges leisure batteries and generator battery. Therefore, only when the generator runs does the leisure and generator battery get charged and not whilst driving. Also truck runs at 24v and leisure and generator battery is 12v.
Generator is already there, he is going to get a knockdown and split charger for the leisure and generator battery, but he cant afford to do this for a couple of months.
He doesnt want to disturb people by running gerator on site and wanted to charge batteries as he went along using the generator. Hope that explains
Hi.
Fridge lorries. They have an engine to power up the fridge box,so i cannot see any thing wrong. My concerns would be fire risk, and fumes affecting the horses, but i am sure these problems will have been sorted.

No problem as long as the exhaust is outside & it's well vented to keep it cool, I used to run one on my race truck to run the aircon & fridge freezer never had a problem.
