We became Motorhomers in June last year. Up until then we had a car and caravan.
The kids had grown up and as far as they were concerned we were "persona nongrata" (except for money).
Our base is York
We bought a secondhand CI Riviera 141 from the dealer next to the A1 near Newark.
When we went to pick it up the step fell off (PDI?) But the best fault it had was the water heater (Truma) It would not stay lit. They took it out tested it tried another it would not work either.
We went home and came back. To cut a long story short, the heater has an extention flue which had been fitted by the factory upside down, allowing combusted gas back in. This meant the water heater had not worked since new(again PDI).
We wondered WHAT HAVE WE DONE buying a motorhome!
Travelling home with the van other motorhomes kept waving at us.
Was something else wrong?
No.
Gosh the original owners must have known a lot of people.
Finally the penny dropped, it was nice to be acknowledged by the MH community.
Since getting the van we have been out and about on average at least once per month.
This summer we have booked the ferry crossings and are heading for Prague.
If anyone sees us on site anywhere, we drink anything thats alcholic!

Hi GeorgeI - looks like the tykes are taking over, we are due to be moving over to the York area sometime soon, so I'll look out for a bh special. and you can wave to all the blue VWs one of them is bound to be me
- don't know why you are unhappy, while you were there waiting [forever] in Newark for their service you can avail yourselves of the luxury facilities - swim, sauna, clubhouse etc. doesn't that more than make up for the downside - no, oh well, just remember to take your membership card if you go to a show and have a free cuppa and a sit.

You can get problems from all dealers including the well known family business situated between the A1 & the A19.
We found the dealer by the A1/A46 to be best on deals and cant really complain over service they have done what we have asked on last two vans from them.

Hello
Sealady, Twooks, & Dodger148.
I enjoy going over to Scarbro. Brid. and especially Flambrough, is this the area you operate around Sealady? The only problem is the A64 during school hols.
We then tend to head for the dales.
Yes you can use the facilities at Newark, but when the motorhome is in the workshops from 8am until 5.30pm. There are only so many times you can swim/sauna/look at Motorhomes. I'm not unhappy it was just a rather unusual introduction to Motorhomes. Probably just a one off?
and I thought we were moving up in to the exclusive world of Motorhoming
We have enjoyed the van ever since.
George

Dodger148 we are not thinking of the same dealer. I speak as I find - [as no doubt other members of this forum] the dealer down the A1 severely let me down. I had to visit four times before the situation was resolved. I put it down to experience and have now moved on.
George1 I do not travel the A64 but usually visit friends south of Brid. who live on a coastal site. Your post sounds as though you have seen me waving to you lol.
Which part of the dales do you frequent the A684 - Askrigg Common is a 'must visit' although the road is very narrow. I have visited the sites at Akebar and Hawes. From the A66- I have visited the site just past Scotch Corner and also at Lartington

I do tend to go on rallies/meets with both the C.C.C. & C.C.
Last weekend (7th Feb)we were up at Crowedge (near Penistone)on a rally. They had an organised walk on the Saturday morning. The hailstones were comming in horizontally even the dog was cowering!
We seek out venues where we can walk and enjoy the isolation, thats one of the reasons we enjoy Flamborough head. You can walk for hours along the clifftops and never see a soul.
We have done bite size parts of the three peaks but aren't up to the whole thing.
A684 beautiful Aysgarth falls, the green roads around West Burton.
Middleton in Teesdale ideal for wandering.
When I used to help with a youth group we took a group of teenagers to Lartington for a walking weekend. The hostel has now closed. Too expensive to bring it up to modern standards.
