Hi ytank - Yes you can avoid buying a vignette or Go box - But must stay off the motorways in Austria.
We bought a detailed large scale map which helped -

Surprised Ciao tutti, as has been said and discussed frequently on these forums before, if you are going to transit Austria, and your motorhome is not over 3500 Kg. you need a vignette for motorways and some freeways. If you are going to use the Brenner fast route you pay a separate toll anyway. If your motorhome is over 3500 Kg. then you need a go box. Both cost relatively little in the overall budget for a motorhome holiday either in Austria, or transiting Austria to e.g. Slovenia or Italy.
If you are transiting Switzerland, or touring in Switzerland, similar regulations apply. Either a vignette valid for a year for up to 3500 Kg. or a daily charge over 3500 Kg. Again costs are reasonable taking into account the cost of engineering the roads in an Alpine environment. Rolling Eyes What I am unable to understand is this constant obsession with trying to save these relatively small amounts amongst the motorhoming fraternity, either British or Italian?
It is worth bearing in mind that very often you may find yourself on one of the said roads without even realising that you have entered it; and then get a hefty fine! This is a particular trick of the Austrian police on the roads that border on lake Constance. Also Swiss police as you are starting to transit from Basel on in.
saluti,
eddied
