I've a Garmin which I've mounted on the dash and connected their external ariel to it, works great. Did think about using a laptop but its difficult to see the screen when driving. At some complexed junctions it useful to see the layout and way to go as well as voice guidance, especially when navigator is snoozing.

Don't know about Ralph, but having a bench seat, mine sits in the middle. No trailing wires as it runs from an inverter under the passenger seat and has a bluetooth receiver. I can hear voice guidance ok and its easy to view for both passenger and driver if needed. Good protection from road shocks too. I will have to rig a mount from engine cover when (if?) I fit replacement seats
