For campsites hard IMO to beat Caravan Club's France & Spain. No pictures but see PJs post about cheaper purchase price under 'discounts'.
Aires directory when you get to France. From most large Presse/Newspaper shops.
Again IMO Rough Guides are the best touring guides. At least they are written with an understanding of British tastes and pockets rather than American.
Many discount book shops sell cheap picture books of France. These can also provide fuel for the dreams.
Or there are many pictures in the site's photo albums.
Or again your local library.
Some time ago the AA produced a book caled Secret France. It may well still be available form them, I don't know, but it's certainly still in some discount book shops. Not specifically for motor homing but does give details of some smashing, out of the way, spots throughout France. Worth getting if you spot one.

The first time we headed over to France we were very nervous and bought loads of books on camp sites. Now we head of in whichever direction we fancy and seem to come across loads of sites Municipal,Aires, and privately owned sites.
What I am trying to say is just buy one Guide, just in case you can't find anything straight away. OH and don't forget a couple of good maps one that gives an overview of France and another more detailed one
Then just enjoy a fabulous country best of luck on your Wandering
I'd agree with moondog, Caravan europe vol 1 is one of the best books for general touring info and campsites in France, follow this link for more info....
if you are prepared to take a chance then the caravan club books are good because they give you more sites. the caravan club don't check any of the sites but some have member's comments. the problem i found was that we all have different standards. what someone found to be a good site i wouldn't let a cat stay there.
the best site guide i have used is the alan rogers guide books. they check each site every year and if the standards aren't good enough they don't get in.
after a few trips to france we found we picked an alan rogers site in the area we wanted to go to and used the caravan club books for one night stops.
now i don't use sites at all. i use aires de service or stop overnight anywhere i think i'm not causing a problem to anyone.
have a great trip
mike

Yes the AA Secret France book is one of our favourites for planning and ideas of places off the beaten track. Have seen it occasionally in cheap bookshops.
Concerning campsite guides, It's easy to buy them when you get there. The French federation guide lists about 10,000 sites of all grades (thats why France is campers paradise). We avoid the very basic one star sites but two and three star municipal sites generally suite us. There is also an annual guide published by Michelin with about 2000 sites inspected and quality graded by them. Both these are in French with English intro and mostly symbols.
We've never booked ahead and only had problems finding a pitch near the coastal resorts, but if you are going in the school holidays and want good pitches with more facilities for several days the C&CC Carefree and similar CC brochures may be a starting point for a first visit if you are club members.
We've listed quite a lot of sites in various areas of France on our website. see link below)
We find the planning is great but often end up somewhere different
