We hope to be on the continent this summer (for the first time). From reading other postings France is very busy during these months.

We would like to have nice weather but not too hot. What about Germany and Holland or are these places just as bad. Has anyone got suggestions?

Thanks

Hi Friday,
We have to holiday the last week of July and the first week of August because of my Factory shutdown. We have been to France for the last six years and haven't found it to be too crowded, and we stay on commercial sites for swimming pools and entertainment. If you want to stay on this type of site you will need to book during the next few weeks to guarantee a pitch, although some take pot luck and manage to get a couple of nights here and there. The aires tend to be busy, you need to be there in good time to get a place in some of the tourist areas, but we have always managed to find an overnight stop when required.
Busy in France is not like busy over here!!

We visited Normandy and Brittany in July / August last year and stayed on a variety of sites. We didn't struggle to get onto any sites (maybe we just got lucky!!)

my advise would be just go for it, if your first choice site is too busy there are plenty more. Wink

In 03 we toured southern Germany (Black Forest area) had to go in August due to school hols. Was nervous about not pre-booking but needn't have been. Absolurly delightful area, very m'home friendly as is all of Germany, loads of stellplatz, and the sites we visited had room if you turned up. I thoroughly recommend it.

Don't worry too much about where eactly you are going. The great beauty of a motorhome is that you are free to wander. If you find it too hot then go north ( text family in UK and get them to look at the European weather forecasts and advise !) If too crowded then go to somewhere less popular.

From the experience of many years we have never been disappointed with any part of Europe that we have been to. We have had to head south from Germany one August when it never stopped raining and we have turned north again when it got too humid. We have found fascinating small towns that we have virtually had to ourselves when the tourist traps nearby have been teaming.

We have only once been turned away from a campsite ( because there was an open air opera on in the village that fortnight) but we do tend to avoid the busiest areas and go for municipal campsites rather than commercial ones.

Keep a diary of your trip to look back on in the winter and go and enjoy. Take maps to enable you to go to France or Germany or Holland and then relax and potter. Apart from a few areas Europe is much less crowded than UK even at the height of the summer.

Its strange, where I would have normally assumed that Mid August in fact all of August to be busy, last Year we went on the 12th of August and although the 1st week was busy by the end of that week, 19th many of the Europeans are starting to leaving.

We were at the very popular Playa Bara and although still enough going on it was plenty of space, like wise the sites we stayed at on the way back through France.

Therefore I would suggest that Mid August is a good time to go if you are going at anytime in August
