In 11 years with our A/S talisman we hardly ever used the ladder, other than for cleaning the roof, and replacing the rooflights. We always thought we would have a problem with trespassers on the roof - I would have thought it irresistable in my youth with a few wets inside me - but as far as we know we had nothing like that at all.

Our new Rapido (due march) required an extra £220 odd for a ladder, and they spoil the line completely. (On the Talisman it fitted in well). So instead we did what Amok did, bought a telescopic ladder at the recent caravan show at Earls Court (Olympia?), cost £165 from BPS Access Solutions Ltd. It extends to 3.8 M. http://www.bpsaccesssolutions.co.uk/telescopicladder.htm However the ladder is well constructed, and the telescopic action is satisfyingly smooth

We thought this a more secure solution, as a Heki must be reasonably easy to force.

Hi,
Where else would I clamp my camping sat dish if I did not have a ladder.
I find the ladder is invaluable along with roof rails for cleaning the roof, far safer than climbing up a a step or other ladder to get access.

I use the roof on our Rapido as a viewing gallery at air shows. The roof is designed with a non slip surface for walking on as described in the handbook.
This was an important buying point for me to have this facility. The only issue is that there is a vent on the roof, right where the ladder joins, so the access is a little tricky, especially when carrying binoculars and camera ( for plane spotting, not watching nude sunbathers. Didn't see too many of those at the Midlands rally, probably due to the cold weather!!)
I also use the ladder to secure my flagpole, or the TV aerial mast.
Each to their own, its good to have the choice.
Colin

Thanks for all the comments - don't think we need to worry about having one fitted.

The "style statement" view brought back to me my childhood when I thought that landrovers equipped for safari looked so exciting - at the age of 12 I wrote to a Land Rover dealer asking for more information and they phoned me up asking if I wanted a test drive!

My Pilote has a ladder and a reinforced roof.

Very good for climbing up to see what's causing the traffic jam and sunbathing

While the ladder makes a fine tie off point for a clothes line.

Don't drive off before you untie it though Shocked
