I thought it worth starting a new topic on this. I have posted this elsewhere but this should be easier to find. If anyone has a list of sales and return outlets which they can verify is accurate please post a link to it. We found an official web site here http://www.go-maut.at/go/default.asp but the info. proved to be nonsense, there were no outlets at several of the addresses given.
You can search by town names and most big towns claim to have outlets, however our experience showed that a good few of these places actually didn't either sell them or even exist.
Eventually we got a Go-Box, it was fairly easy once we found a sales outlet. We tried at the border and were told the nearest place was 80km further in to Austria. We avoided toll roads and carried on just hoping we wouldn't accidentally turn onto one. We found a Shell Station supplying go-boxes form a machine rather like a cash machine. Five euro deposit on the box and a minimum credit to put on it of seventy five euros. We didn't know anything about our emissions so tried ignoring that question. That was OK but I assume the machine will have put us in a high emissions category.
It does seem perfectly possible to avoid toll roads, but I would not want to be caught out.
We are still in Austria and I imagine returning it will also be a complete carry on. I will report back when I know. Having googled this it seems that our experience is common, Alan.
Edit: Don't do what we did. You must have your emissions correctly entered when you get your GO Box otherwise it defaults to the most expensive category. I guess we travelled around 120 miles on motorways and I know we used around 70 euros in credit so it cost us approx. 60c a mile! We didn't want to buy the road, just to drive on it. We kept the box and will see if we can sort the emissions problem out in case we go back to Austria, Alan.

just bumping this topic as we hope to pass through and visit Austria on our tour soon. thanks to erneboy and others i understand how to get a Go box but has anyone yet found how to get proof of emmisions for your vehicle?
i have asked 2 local fiat commercial service centres and they have heard of this being needed, even applies to London now, but they don't know how proof is obtained. i have also emailed fiat head office but no reply yet.
anyone done this?
