Hi just been reading the north cape thread and was wondering about a round trip: France to sweden via denmark around to norway, finland, russia, down through the baltic states and home.
If russia is a bit dodgy then from finland back into sweden and the ferry to baltic states or poland.
About 10000 miles...we did it in 2000.
Calais, Hamburg, Copenhagen,(Ferry), Oslo, Mo I Rana, Lofotens(whale watching), North Cape, Kirkenes, (missed out on Russia), Rovanieme, Stockholm, Kristiansand, Malmo, Copenhagen again, Calais.
Took almost 3 months over it.

Olley.
Centred around Mid Summer's day. Finland is trees trees and more trees and lots of midges. Sites we stayed on were basic and clean but a bit of offsite camping is always available somewhere. Not a lot to be seen in the countryside so you will need to keep travelling along. For all Scandinavian travel we found a need for both Visa and Mastercard as not garages take both but they all took something.

my dream! Especially the northern part. If only my employer would give me 3 months off...
I would be careful with Russia. I have been there (by plane, not by motorhome) and I know people who have done it with their van, however they have a self-built van on an old Mercedes lorry chassis which looks quite shabby from the outside. But it is very sturdy and the old engine gulps a lot of fuel but does not mind fuel quality too much. There are problems with bad or adulterated fuel. In addition there are strict visa requirements. And do not expect to get along with English. You will find more people speaking German than English. Basic Russian knowledge is very helpful. Security level is supposed to be astonishingly high, as long as you keep far away from the big cities.
Poland has no visa requirements as it is now EU member. Roads are improving fast but driving manners are about the most rude in Europe. Nevertheless, like in Russia the people are extremely friendly and helpful once they step out of their car. Camp sites do exist and are usually quite cheap, but on some the facilities do not (yet) meet western standards. Again German or Russian knowledge might be more helpful than English, but you will get along. Security level again is against all prejudice quite high in rural areas, but problematic in the cities. In urban areas only go on guarded car parks. If a self-proclaimed "warden" shows up and asks for money to guard your van, then either pay (even if you fund the local mafia) or move on immediately. Otherwise your van will surely be damaged.
I have never been to the Baltic states yet, but I assume that the situation is similar to Poland. Finland, where I also have not yet been, is supposed to be similar to Sweden.
Best Regards,
Gerhard
