While no help to the present discussion, some 30 years ago we checked into Le Columbier Camp Site at Frejus quite late on the last Friday in August. There was one pitch vacant right on the edge of the site overlooking fields of vines and we were delighted. We put the kids to bed, both were quite young and retired early ourselves having had a long drive that day. We all slept soundly until about 8 am the next morning, quite unusual for the children, and when we staggered out of the awning discovered that this huge site had emptied, literally overnight. Just a few Brits, Dutch and Germans were left, not one single French van. The trek back to Paris was on ready to start work, school on the Monday. We had a splendid fortnight with the site pretty much to ourselves.

I do remember travelling up in the middle of July from the south of France and coming across a huge traffic jam, it was going nowhere and was stretching for about 30 miles, could not see why it was like that as the road ahead was clear. Near the back of the queue one family had taken out a table and chairs and were stting in the middle of it having their lunch. No Joke. This was on a Friday. Now I want to go to the South of France in late July but everytime I mention it , I am been reminded of those traffic queues. I was watching a travel programme tecently and they were staying in a campsite in the south of France near Frejus, they talked about the traffic everywhere as it took about 10 times longer to get anywhere than it should i.e five minute journey took 50 minutes. A friend of ours also said that it took him and hour and a half to travel to the supermarket one day, 3 miles away this was in the middle of August on the south coast. But I still wnat to go. So does anyone know of how to avoid this traffic, I will be travelling from Dusseldorf.

Hi Ladybird,
I haven't been to Frejus since about 93 and the traffic on the coast was horrible then. But I like the south coast and now take the shorter journey and stay in the region between Nimes and Montpellier, I stayed a few days there last august on my way to Spain and the Traffic was not to bad. Also I have stayed near the coast south of the Camargue (can remember the name of the town) but that was very nice and the traffice only got busy on the weekends. The only probelem was that we stayed in the middle of the camargue and got eaten alive by the bugs while on site but there was none in the town by the sea. If I remember correctly there was a MH parking in the town,
I do like to sty a little away from the coast and the main Tourists so I guess it is generally easier to morve around.

Does it have to be in the middle of August?

Anyhow from personal experience it is bad planning to be on the road south of Lyon on a friday

Have you considered going east via Grenoble and then down via Sisteron?

About 16 miles longer

And avoiding supermarkets...except for fuel of course;-)

I will hopefully be down in the south by 24th July and maybe going by what irishmike said the best bet would be head over west, however I would love to go back to Monte Carlo, oh decisions decisions,
