Ski Info Jan 07 for MHF

I thought you skiers might like some info from our recent 2 week trip to the Southern Alps. It’s note form, but don’t hesitate to ask me if you want more info.

Alpe d’Huez

Tuition: highly recommended, this small British run skischool offers private lessons or small groups 3x2 hour mornings.

Aire: Parking de Brandes at Les Bergers On entering Village turn right at first roundabout (with multi-storey carpark “Les Bergers” ahead.) Follow signs for the Altiport and Tennis Courts and you will arrive at the Aire. It’s big, with views and a sunny aspect. It was quiet when we were there, half camping cars, half seasonaires, like Les Menuires, but we experienced no problems or nuisance. Free parking. Flot Bleu for water and waste (4 euros for 100L water or 20 minutes of electricity). Purchase token from Les Bergers car park or the sports centres. Loos. Rubbish and recycling bins. LPG (GPL) is available at the fuel station at the entrance to the village.

n.b. The other Aire in many guides, Parking de L’Eclose, no longer exists.

Campsite: not really except down in Bourg dOisans

Vaujany (linked to Alpe dHuez ski area)

Aire: Near cable car, free parking and services, electric 5euros/24 hours, obtain token for hook-up from Tourist Office. Indoor swimming pool nearby.

coaching by Darren Turner, we don’t know him but he was highly recommended to us by Oli of Masterclass in Alpe d’Huez.

Monêtier / Serre Che1500

Parking Camping Car Les Charmettes: approaching from Col des Lauterets turn right before entering the village, following signs for Remontées Mechaniques and Base de Loisirs. The Parking is found on the left a few hundred metres past the lift station. Waste, but water not available at time of our visit…obtainabe from Villeneuve..

Campsite: Camping Les Deux Glaciers:

Villeneuve/La Salle des Alpes/Serre Che 1400

Aire Communal/ Parking Camping Car Le Pontillas: follow signs for Pontillas Gondola and Plan d’Eau. Charge: 8 euros/day + tax, apply to Tourist Office in main square beyond ice rink. There’s a free Flot bleu with water and dumping (but no electric) just outside barrier to Aire (so available to all.)

Private Aire: follow signs to Fréjus Gondola. Charge: 16 euros/day+tax

Chantemerle/ Saint Chaffrey/Serre Che 1350

No Aire but the Tourist Office will direct you to permitted parking behind the tennis courts, near the Maeva Apartment block. Approaching from the Villeneuve, take first left on entering Chantemerle.

Briancon/Serre Che1250

We didn’t really consider skiing from here but it’s possible, I’ve got some info about parking if neede. What you might want to know is that there’s an Aldi and a Centre Commercial (with Geant and fuel also GPL we think) on the way in from Serre Che, and that to visit the old city you head for parking Champs du Mars in the direction of Montgenevre. Nice wander and views, historically interesting. It’s free outside school holidays and you can overnight for up to 2 nights there.

Montgenèvre

we found out about them as an alternative ski school to ESF, they offer private lessons or small groups over a few days, but we didn’t try them.

Aire: to be found at the exit of the village (after emerging from the road tunnel) in the direction of Italy. Sunny, great spot close to pistes and cross-country trails. Easy walk into village, a wee bit far in skiboots, but ski bus stops outside Aire every 30 mins in daytime, and you can ski onto piste below site. Skipass can be bought at chair below site Wed-Sun or in village at other times. Aire operated like a large carpark –great concept! Barrier entry system, pay prior to exit. We paid 37 euros for 5 days. Charges decrease by the day to 7 days…then rise steeply. Consequently no longstayers. Water, waste and hookups included. 280 places but only 80 hook-ups.

Campsite: One down at St. Alberts, nothing nearer.

Hope this will be helpful to someone. We had a fabulous trip it’s a super area to tour. As I said, any questions, do post,

Regards, Ruth

thanks for that info
we set off on wednesday evening via the tunnel.
we are looking at heading towards serre chevalier as there seems to be lots of options for overnight parking.

which is the best in your opinion.
bearing in mind it will be half term!
we have 2 children 8 and 9 yrs who love to ski but don't like to walk in ski boots (don't blame them really).
so we like to be as near to the lifts as we can,but also within walking distance of the odd restaurant.

Hi Majvs

I think Serre Che would be good for kids so long as the sno is decent at resort level. Otherwise there might be a bit of a gap between the (perfectly good) nursery slopes at resort level and the skiing higher up..they might find some of the runs down a bit busy/bare/whatever. But it's a good place for families in general, I should think.

You'd find the Pontillas Aire really convenient for the lift(it's adjacent) also it's next to the Ice Rink. It's small however, only 20 places. If it's full there's masses of space at Monetier, it's only a bit further to the lifts, but it's a chair and you'd have to come to Serre Che for water. You need to arrive at the Pontillas Aire within tourist office hours to get in to it...but when we were there the barrier was broken, so we got in ok, then went to the office to pay. I have to say that not everyone seemed to be trying as hard to pay, but there you are. Personally, think if we take that attitude we've no right to moan when they shut it down.

The Frejus Aire you'd need to book I think.

Alpe and Montgenevre have really good nursery slopes. From Montgenevre Aire theres a skibus if they don't want to walk, from Alpe d'Huez Aire it is a bit of a walk in skiboots though... (5-10mins)we found it fine but kids might protest. They'd like the resort though as it has an ice rink and 2 swimming pools also wonderful nursery slopes (d/o how well they ski).

Have a good trip wherever you end up!

Ruth

thanks for that prompt reply

i should have pointed out that they are very good ski-iers so we're past the nursery slopes. in fact we have to try to keep them off the blacks!

we will be arriving in the evening on thursday so hopefully we should make it in a spot before the weekend.

just for the record we went to les gets last year which was excellent but once we were in our spot we couldn't get out as the french just blocked us in! we paid our tax at the tourist office. like you we are grateful for such good parking aires near the lifts.

the year before we went to samoens(we have friends who live there)
but due to the move of the aire we probably wouldn't return as it is too out of the way.

Terrific info. I think we ought to do a ski/mh info sheet for the MHF forum. I'm happy to put it together if people think it would be of value. We could ask people for the info and web links and pics and get it together what do you think?

A factsheet would be a good idea. I have a lot of info. I'll pm you or why don't you pm me, then we could take the idea forward.
