A year ago to the day our 616 chassis had the 'big' service at a MB dealer so a year later I booked it in for a service.

The dealer (MB) looked through the paperwork and agreed that as we had only done 10,000 miles over the past year all we needed was an oil and oil filter change - great I thought.

So, an oil change and I asked for an extra 4 litres of oil (for top ups) - the bill was 250.............I thought it was a mistake. Over 110 for labour. The oil was about 7 a litre (that was a discount price, reduced from 10). This service did not include any other filters.

When I questioned the price, saying, "250 for an oil change" I was told that it was more than an oil change as the mechanic had had a look around the vehicle.

Nuts!

I am more than happy and capable of doing this work myself, except to say that I don't really have a place where I can do the work.

Maybe I feel a bit worse as having just spent the past five yers in the US where we had our pickup (a 6 litre V8 monster) serviced at a main agent for $29.95! Yes, less than $30 for a service. Seems to be a standard price for an oil service regardless of what it is or how much oil you require.

Wow, thats a total rip off.

I would have asked them first what it required(full or major) and how much it would be.
You would have been better either finding a good local garage or buying the parts yourself and paying for a mobile mechanic to do it.

Our Merc is due a major one, i found somewhere that will do it for £120, i know its not all about price, you need a good job doing too.

Paul.

An old baby,s bath to catch the oil, 13mm ring spanner to remove the drain plug and a £7.00 special tool to remove the oil filter if yours like ours is a little cramped. Full synth low ash oil, new MANN filter element and the jobs a goodun. 20 minutes or so.

How much??

Keep an eye out for the yearly Halfords half price offers on full synth oils, get 10 litres in 2 cans.

Does the 616 provide "dash reminders" for oil and major services? Is it sufficent to just change engine oil on an annual basis otherwise?

The "Assyst" was introduced around 2003 model year I think. In any case, I would still change the oil annually, but that is me.

You can get some great Branded oils off ebay. I Just bought 12 litres of Mobil 1 ESP for £56. But you can get lots of brands. Total, Shell for less. There was a Merc dealer selling some older stock Shell for less than £3 a litre. I will try and find a link.

But If the MB stamp in the book is what you are looking for. Take your own oil in and pay MB the Labour.

I got North Manchester Commercials (now Enza) to do a service on our old 416CDi and they only charged me £80 INC Oil!.

Try ring around.

I used these people to do my oil change on my Citroen Relay, they were very reasonable and the service was excellent.

As soon as my vehicles are out of warranty I take them to a small independant garage specialising in cars, commercial vehicles including MH's I have used for years.
He has all of the latest servicing programmes and gismos but no posh front office or carpets.
You want coffee you make it yourself.
Charges a fraction of main dealer prices and I get to chat to the boss who advises exactly whats what with the vehicle.

Did it even need an oil change?
I took my 315 in for its first annual service/oil change only to be told that it was a biannual service on light duty use.
According to my local MB truck dealer the 416? (it is branded Dodge) that replaced my 315 also only requires a biannual oil change/service.
