Ford Transit MK7, 27k on the clock, 3½ years old.

Turning the van very slowly at full lock "bang!" and the power steering disappears!

Insurance & breakdown cover with Safeguard.

One call direct to AA - all details on their database.

Happened at 14:30.

Man in van at van within 40mins.

Diagnoses fracture of rubber centre part of the camshaft pulley hence belt driving PS pump fell off, as did the pulley when he pulled it.

He doubted that Ford would even have a spare one in UK, so not a quick job.

Quandary, had been staying outside dorts house in Watford, broke down at Aylesbury, grandort with us!

Dort managed to arrive to pick up grandort just as recovery truck arrives!

Took three relays of trucks to get us home due to drivers running out of hours.

Got home at 23:00.

Superb service from start to finish, calls from AA updating us at every stage.

The AA will even pay for onward recovery from home to an appointed garage tomorrow morning as there were no garages open (being Sunday) and they will not allow unsecured storage.

Even better news is the extended warranty we took out!!

Oh, the ignominy of being on the back of recovery trucks for all that time!!

Reminds me of the time I had been working night at Cambridge Signal Box and started my return to Poole at 9am in my 2 year old Mondeo. I had only been on the M11 a few miles when all power was lost and I cruised to a halt on the hard shoulder. Call to RAC and a van arrived and diagnosed the timing belt tensioner had broken up. He towed me of the motorway and I awaited a recovery truck which came after a 2 hour wait. It had a maximum speed of 50mph so a leisurly drive down M11, M25 and M3.
Round about Baingstoke on the M3 the recovery truck broke down and a 2 hour wait whilst a commercial breakdown service arrived and fixed the governor wiring out which was shorting to the chassis.
I eventually arrived home nearly 12 hours after first breaking down but at least the repairs consisting of a new cylinder head etc. were not my responsibility as it was a lease car. I can still remember sitting on the embankement of the M3 for 2 hours looking at my car on the transporter which itself had its cab tilted forward.

Well the next step has been completed.

Recovery truck arrived as promised this morning to take the van to the garage.

Safeguard very helpful when I rang this morning and within minutes had confirmed the time of the pick-up.

Very, very pleased with the whole operation.

Now will have to wait for the extended warranty people to wriggle out of paying for the actual repair - they are bound to have some get-out clause!

Will keep you informed of the progress of that next stage.

I know the feeling only too well.

Our MoHo was a non-starter in the New Forest just 30 miles from where we live. The breakdown service arrived promptly and took us off to Bournemouth.

It took us a further three days to get home to Portsmouth. Mind you, we did have a first rate hotel stay in Bournemouth!
