Last MOT on MH (2003 Sprinter 316) had an advisory that there was slight play in one of the front wheel bearings.

Are they adjustable or is it replacement ?? ( I'm just too idle to take the wheel off and check Rolling Eyes )

If it is front wheel drive then no, but I have successfully tweaked the front hub nut up to remove play, you'll need a long bar and a strong arm and the nut will only move about 1 split pin hole or 2 degrees, if it is rear wheel drive then the bearings will be

Hi Mr Plodd

I liked your answer to one of the recent threads - y'know the one - 18-year old driving a van in excess of 3500kg gvw - I'm on your side on that one.

Anyhow, loddy's answer to your question is quite correct - you can take up the play in wheel bearings using a bit of muscle and a long bar - but that is only a short term measure - and it can result in overheating and eventual disintegration of the bearing. Its not pretty when a wheel bearing breaks apart - especially at speed and usually results in the wheel parting company with the stub axle.

My advice - change the wheel bearing toute suite. Its not as expensive as the alternative breakdown and buggeration.

Regards,

Brian

Thanks for the info Loddy !!

Mine is indeed rear wheel drive ( I didnt think you could get a front wheel drive Sprinter Confused )

Wont take me too long to sort it out at the wekend then.

Mind you I am a bit suspicious as when I had my car MOT'd the other day I had an advisory saying " Slight play in the OSF wheel bearing" so I took it back to the main agents (just about to run out of 3 year warranty so I had the MOT done early!) and they said " Na, nuffink wrong there mate we cant find any play"
When I went to pick it guess what "We changed your wheel bearing sir, just to be safe" WTF ?????????

Finally got round to doing the job!!

Dead simple, dont even have to take the wheel off.

1. Remove dust cap over wheel bearing
2. Inside is a brilliant bit of engineering, instead of a castleated nut and a split pin there is a split nut that is pinched together with a allen key headed machine screw.
3. Loosen the bolt off a little, rotate the split nut EXACTLY the right amount to take out the play and then retighten the bolt!

What a cracking good system! It allows for very precise adjustment of the bearing rather than having to select just too tight or just too loose which is waht you get with the "normal" nut and split pin system.
