We re considering replacing our Arto with an 2006-2008 Mercedes based Rapido

I know some of the Mercedes can be quite low-geared making cruising at 70 a bit unpleasant.

If you have particularly an A class on a 316/318 chassis could you tell us roughly what the RPM at 70mph is

Thanks for your help.

Hi,i don't think that it makes any differance if it a class low profile or coach built the chassis is the same, so the gear ratios will be the same, where did you get the idea that merc gear ratios were low , they might have been in the real old 208 type models,i have a 316 coach built, and the gear ratios are great, mine runs at about 2.800 rpm at 70mph and returns 24 mpg whether on a motorway, b road, towing, mine has been re-mapped and is a pleasure to drive, hope this helps.

Thanks for info Dennis, thats exactly what I m after.

Before we bought our Arto in 2006 we drove a 416 based Hymer 644? with sprintshift and as soon as I got it on the M6 it was so undergeared it was terrible. This did indeed remind me of a 208 based Autotrail that suffered a bit from the same problem.

Thanks again
Jon

I'll second Brillopad's comments. My 316 has not been remapped, is manual and I am still very pleased with the way it drives.

I am fairly new to this MHF site and forums, we have a 2007/8 Rapido A Class 990M on a 318CDi chassis with 5 speed auto box. On our last trip I noted that at 60mph, with typical cruising on a motorway the revcounter showed 2000, at 75mph when briefly overtaking etc. the revcounter showed 2500. The 3 litre V6 engine seems to have a consumption of between 20-25mpg, but I can tell you that the advantages of that engine far, far outweigh a small penalty at the pumps. The smooth, lusty and quiet power delivery make the heavy Rapido seem like a vehicle half the weight, coupled with the superb gearbox, it is a real pleasure to drive at any speed, but particularly pleasing on the fast roads as HGV's do not impede progress. Pootling along at 20-30mph is serenely quiet, only the crockery making the occasional clatter. I would say that on this chassis and engine Mercedes have the gearing just right, not sure whether the manual and auto box differ greatly on mph/1000 rpm.

2,800rpm at 70mph works out at 25mph/1,000 revs. This is a little low for a large diesel.
My 2.8 5 speed Ducato runs 2,300 rpm at 70 = 30mph/1,000 revs.
I believe the newer Ducatos are about the same in 6th.

I have a 2005 2.7cc 316 automatic and it is a treat to drive. Don't know precisely what revs at 70mph as I tend to drive at 55 - 60. being serviced at moment but next time I drive it at 60 - 70 I will let you know. At a guess 2500ish
I have cruise as well and on french autoroutes it is so easy to drive - you could almost go and make yourself a cup of tea!

Hello,

As mentioned, what type of body is not the issues.

It all depends on the chassis specifications.

For example what wheels, gearbox (all except the 6xx series were offered with 3 different gearboxes, the 6 Series two) axle and then - final drive.

The Mercedes Sprinter pre 2006 Sprinter:

3 Series mostly had 225/70/15 Tyres fitted along with matched Rear axle ratios. This gives lower revs per mile.

However, the 4 series and in particular the 416CDi Variant with the 5 Cylinder engine was usually fitted with much smaller Wheels and tyres (195/70/15'S). And fitted with matched axle drives. This leads to much higher revs per mile.

Result = The 416 can usually climb hills for fun!

See here for my posts

I no longer have the 416CDi

I now run two Euro IV >2006 Sprinters. A 518CDi Manual Sprinter and a 311CDi Auto

The 518 Revs around 2,400 at 70mph Speedo Reading
The 311 Revs around 2,900 at 70mph Speedo Reading

If you look at the Latest Euro V Sprinter, here is the Spec:

210/310CDi Standard Rear Axle Ratio is 4.364 in Manual or Auto
213/313CDi Standard Rear Axle Ratio is 4.182 as above

216/316CDi
219/319CDi Both have Standard Axle Ratio of 3.923 Manual or Auto.

You can specify different Final Drives for specific requirements when having your Sprinter built at the factory.

Hope this helps?

TM

Cruising at 70 ? you seem to be in a hurry to open your wallet at a fuel pump. Very Happy

With Both, I tend to hover around 55-60 with cruise control on.

If I need to get past a truck and there is a lunatic on my tail, I may sometimes go to 70 to get out of the nutters way!.

The best one was on the A31 coming out of Dijon. Arogant Frog in a Peugeot rolled up at terrific speed and was on my tail waving his arms, side to side in the mirrors. Put my foot down to get in and let him past. All I got was the finger!.

Best part was, I was in a convoy of 3 vehicles, 16 passengers. We caught up with the Frog and he got around 16 fingers and a toot from our horns as he was getting booked at the motorway Aire buy the Gendarmes !
