Hi, having replaced my 2 leisure batteries fairly recently and subsequently reading articles on here regarding correct procedure for re-connecting solar panel controller, I am concerned that I may
have not done it correctly, as the panel is now getting some fuel!
I moved the van (to avoid flat spotting the tyres) and noticed "rusty" deposits on the ground (concerete) directly below the battery box.

The method I used was to connect the main power cables to the new batterys and then the solar cables last. Is this correct ? or do you have to disconnect the wires at the controller itself and reconnect these lastly? If I do have to do this, can you not simply pull the 1.5 amp fuse from the controller in order to achieve this?

Finally, have I screwed the new batteries?

FYI Steca 8.8c / 100 w panel / 110 amp h batts

Thanks, in trepidation.

You disconnect solars first then batteries. Reconnect batteries then solars. Sounds like you did that.

Techno100 is correct
Connect the batteries to the regulator and then connect the panels to the regulator

This way the regulator recognises the voltage of the batteries and so will regulate to that voltage. Otherwise the regulator will take the voltage of the solar panel (18 volts) and regulate to that voltage and possibly frying the batteries

Thanks you two. Any idea on the "rusty" marks-could it be batteries have boiled-or does this appear to be normal gassing event?
They appear to be operating normally, although we cant get away to test them properly at the mo.

I very much doubt that the rust is related to the batteries as it is winter and even if the panels were connected wrong we haven't had any worthwhile sun at this time of year to have caused any excessive overcharging.

It appears you connected them correctly so with a 100W panel during then from Dec through Feb you would have only collected around 50+ amps given the weather we experienced, less the natural drain of the batteries through alarm, radio, clock etc. the balance would be not much more than status quo
