Before leaving Oxford CC&C site this morning to drive the 80 miles home I reset the computer. It's nearly all dual carriageway and motorway so I set the cruise control to 55mph and couldn't believe that, when I got home, it was showing an average of 39.5 mpg.

I normally drive at the legal limits, am fairly heavy footed and my fuel consumption is normally around 32mpg. So, if the computer is accurate, by reducing speed by 15mph means a fuel saving of around 20%.

I must say I don't enjoy driving at that speed as it means getting constantly tangled up with lorries. But if it means saving one gallon in every five maybe it's the price I'll have to pay.

Incidentally, it's an X250 2.2 120bhp Peugeot.

The only time I exceeded 24mpg was last year coming down the Col de Madeleine then it was 65mpg. Laughing

You have answered your own question !!!

It never ceases to amaze me how many motorhomes go flying past me on the motorway. A MH has the aerodynamics of a breeze block and drag (I think) increase by the square of the speed Surprised Surprised Aerodynamics are vital (just look at the efforts the F1 teams make on that score.

Thyerefore it make sense to keep your speed down as far as is reasonable. Why do you think fuel consumption figures are worked out at 56mph ??

Ease of the gas, enjoy the scenery and save yourself a wedge !!! #

I never rush if I am away in the van, I'm on holiday so it really doesnt matter if it takes me 20 minutes longer to get wherever I am going

Hi Roly

I've got the older 2.5 litre peugeot and if I take it easy I can get 25mpg, but get the engine working hard and do 65mph plus it goes down to about 22mpg. Sad

Had motorhomes for years, cruise at around 55 to 60 everytime we get overtaken by another motorhome the cry goes up "Another one in a rush to open his walllet"

You must have come across some slow HGV's as they normally cruise at 56 mph. I sit behind a big fat box wagon and get towed along. It is rare that I have to pull out and overtake one.

And that's the crux of it; the number of times we are overtaken by a speeding MH or car only to catch up with them at the next aire, service station or traffic light where they have arrived only minutes beforehand.

The X250 has a very handy device that you can set so that an alarm is sounded if you exceed a pre-set speed. A good reminder as, because it is such a pleasure to drive, you do tend to speed up without being aware.

You are right drag squares with speed we get 26/27 or 22/23mpg towing a Aygo on a A frame at 55mpg, like you we set the speed warning at 60mpg.

We are always being overtaken by caravans and motorhomes, I thought the idea was to relax or am I missing something.
