I have a very rusty front crossmember on my 2000 Fiat Ducato chassis.

It looks quite easy to change or replace as only three bolts each end and few cable clamps. But is it??

Has anyone done this or had it replaced? I don't want to undo the last bolt and end up with my chassis doing the splits.

Ray.

I changed one on a older Hymer 96 vintage I think,It was as easy as you think it is (if the bolts aren't seized) You will have no problem re the chassis but just make sure that the cross member hasn't got a lower radiator mounting attached.

I do see what you mean and did wonder if any other fixings were hidden above.

Thanks Ray.

Thats very nice of you to send the details. I was thinking about looking for a supplyer online. But picked one up at local breakers today while looking for a couple of bits for our old Citroen ZX.

The front member in very good condition was just €50 with two lights for the ZX. Just got to tear myself away from more pleasant occupations and get syked up to change it now.

Thanks Ray.

It is recommended that before you fit the replacement, you give it a proper coat of paint (not just the lick of paint that Fiat apply) and drill a more suitable drain hole to let water out.

Thanks Guys.
I guess if I give the new(ish) crossmember a couple of coats of Hammerite, It should outlast the rest of the van.

Next bit showing signs of excessive corrosion is the battery tray. But I think thats welded in.

Ray.

Thanks for aLL the advice guys. The old member came out quite easily as it almost fell to peices. Some parts seperated and stayed stuck to the radiator pegs.
I am amazed just how far gone the old member is and even more amazed it has just passed it's MOT.
Luckily the rest of the chassis members are like new.
The replacement will be so well preserved with red oxide and rust preventing paint it will outlast the van.
