Hello. i am looking to buy a transit camper. i have seen one in my local paper with low mileage. its an 1,993 cc 1988 standard automatic petrol. I have never owned an auto box vehicle before. i wish to ask you advice about there problems. are there any points i should take a note of when test driving this auto box transit.

Thanks for replys.
eurovip, Andy.
just to add. ive checked out its mot history on the vosa website. on paper it seems ok. it has never seen a welder by the looks of it and has had a knew flywheel fitted. just trying to learn more about auto boxes on this era of transits as im going to take a look at the camper soon. dont want to get my fingers burnt if i can help it.
the only thing that comes to mind is that fords brouhgt out there own auto box as opposed to the bourg-warner and they had a lot of trouble with the tourque converter you could check it out
First thing to do is to dip the auto oil if it is not cherry red then the friction plates may be going and is in excess of a £1000 to have the box out and repaired as I know to my cost.
When you drive it it should be smooth you should hardly notice the changes, check the kick down works by flooring the pedal while running in top gear it should take off as it changes down.

Ok. thanks for that info. i shall take a look a the colour of the oil. how do i tell the difference between the bourg-warner and ford box?
im a newbie to fords. never owned a ford as yet but in the long run i want to be a happy trani owner. no doubt it being an older vehicle there's bound to be some problems but if i go informed i will won't endup with a lemon.
By the way. can i ask you. what does the flywheel do in a autobox and why would it had to be replaced at some point?
The "flywheel" on an autobox is not a flywheel as such. It is the means of mounting the torque converter to the crankshaft. It would normally be changed if the starter ring gear was worn or if there was cracking of the plate itself.
I would have thought if the vehicle has survived so far there wouldn't be much of a problem with the autobox but try a Transit forum to set your mind at rest.
the usual problem with these boxes is the reverse gear not engaging.
make sure it does nor slip in reverse and engages firmly and also as suggested check the oil colour.
