Hi, I'm going 'Solar' & I think that the more Wattage you have @ about 18V, the better.

Or is it?

I can get 100, 120, 140 easily @ 18V or I could go for 280W @ about 18V, the price per Watt is roughly the same, about £2 per Watt.

The size of a 140W panel is approx 1500x800mm @ 13KG, whereas the 280W is approx 1950x1000mm @ 23KG.

So assuming I have a space 2mx1m the 280W will need just one connection, one fitting etc etc..

Or am I missing something?

It's a fair sized investment, so asking you before I purchase.

I have 2 x110A new batteries & like my 'Wild' stuff Wink

Thanks in advance for all your wise words...

No you are not missing anything, just go for the largest your roof space and budget will allow.
You will get better performance from a smaller one that tilts and tracks the sun but these are very expensive.
Just remember that a larger panel will need a larger capacity regulator to handle the extra amps.
A cheaper option, of course, is to add more batteries but that would mean space and weight limitations.

Also with the large panel remember that you do not want any shade over it as it will affect the performance, its no good pushed right upto a air con unit etc, as this will shade/partially shade it at some point duting the day.

Trevor, yes can see your point, £120-ish for a new battery (plus some bits) verses £5-600 for solar, but my 'problem' seems to be getting the Amps back into the batteries.

We are not heavy users, but like a bit of light to cook & eat by, watch the F1 when it's on, always have music playing, need the pump to work for water & shower, etc etc... It is surprising how that mounts up over a few days & at the mo I have no way to replenish the stock of Amps other than via hook-up, which really is not for us most of the time.

I'm very open to suggestion.... In fact I like wind generators, but I can't really se me putting one up & down.

Hi,

Rightly or wrongly I was told that any part of a panel in shade will "stop" the panel working???

So I went for 3 x 40w panels as at least one should be out of the shade most of the time.

I also bought a BM1 battery monitor......great bit of kit.
http://www.marinesuperstore.com/posit/shop/index.php?selectedpartno=99138219&gclid=CN_5u9_MvKgCFUFC4QodKQzGAg

Search and you can get it cheaper!!!

It works very well just need to increase the battery count now!!!

Cheers

Waggys

As i said it will affect the performance, although it wont stop it working it will greatly reduce the efficiency/output.

Well, isn't it strange how a thread can stop & make you think? I guess that's why we post?

I know I need to get Amps back into my batteries, I thought Solar would be the way to go, but if I had more batteries (much cheaper option) I could charge them up before we leave & hopefully just come home with almost empty batteries?

My Better Half dosen't want a genny, nor do we like most commercial sites, so EHU is a rare luxury.

I had thought a single large panel (280W, about 15A) would be the way to go, but maybe a couple of 140W's might be better.. The price is roughly the same.

Decisions, decisions....... Laughing

You could even use a trailer loaded with extra batteries!

Much better to lose the weight of extra batteries and replenish the ones you have using solar.

Just a couple of other thing to consider Very Happy

Leisure batteries do not like being discharged below 50% capacity. Doing so will decrease their working life.

A 280W panel may well be rated at 15A but you will only get 15A out of it at midday on June 21st with a cloudless sky in the tropics. In the real world you will see much less than this probably only 1 amp or less on a rainy day in winter.
