Yes I'm afraid they are a big problem Have you had yours replaced under warranty? there is an out of warranty recall for large customer fleets ie pullmans (Tesco vans).
We have had to forcibly remove some to mobilise the van.
If your key goes in but the lock won't release it's the steering lock.
If the key doesn't go in and turn it can be the interlock relay. #8 I think.
If you can turn the key in the dash then the steering lock is most likely faulty.
If the key will not turn in the dash then the interlock is not unlocking the barrel and allowing it to turn.
If you can't release the steering lock then it has to be broken off.
I would firstly contact your local Merc commercial dealer and ask if there is a good will replacement available to you.
If you need to break off the steering lock they will not consider warranty as you've abused it!
