Can anyone tell me how long it takes for a generator to recharge from the hook up connection on a motorhome, or is it best to charge the leisure battery direct ? Only asking cos someone said you need an earth to charge when you plug into hook up ?? not being techy don't understand.
Spend alot of time in fields at competitions so no EHU available got a genny to recharge but not sure its successful ??
I don't see why your charger should not work with generator plugged in. I think if it didn't, because you didn't have a proper earth, then nothing else would work either.
Depends on the power output of the geny. But at best it will only charge at the same rate as EHU as it's your inbuilt battery charger that is doing the charging.
As for Earthing, generators should be earthed via a spike in the ground. I don't know the spec for the spike, sorry. The reason is that if you have a faulty appliance in your MH you technically have no earth unless the geny is earthed!!!
I am sure someone with a more technical understanding will be able to give you a better answer but the above is the basics.

If you need to charge your battery then it means running the generator all day which could be deemed to be a tad anti-social. A good solar panel array is a more elegant solution, especially for the summer.
Your charger can recharge at 1/10th of the capacity rating (the 3 hr discharge rate C3).
So whatever the size of your battery you have to put 5/10th of your capacity back in and you are going to do it a 1/10th rate.
So 5 hrs
Example 110Ahr Battery
55Ahr required
Max charge rate C3/10 or 110/10 = 11A
so 11A for 5 hrs = 55Ahr

This may not really help but I checked the voltage of the '12 volt output' on my generator recently and it measured over 20 volts. I am not an expert but I don't think connecting that direct to the battery for charging would be a good thing, unless a charge controller was in the circuit. Am I right experts? If so I would prefer to connect via the 230volt input and use the 'van's onboard charger.
