hello, im looking for my first camper
but im struggling to decide on which one to get!!!
i like all the styles of van and would probibly sway towards a 1979 bay viking top or devon moonraker as i am loking at these atm but this is not my problem!!
i would be using the van for every day use and do not have a garage and my machanical skills are limited although im an aircraft fitter and dont mind getting my hands dirty!!!
so this has got me thinking i may be better getting a t4 or t5 van??
i would prefer to old type t1 t2 but with not having a garage, using as every day motor and not up the scratch on machanical stuff would it be best to go for t4 or t5?? are the old ones rely that un reliable?
any help or ideas would be much appreciated!! just trying to put things into prospective befor i buy the right van for me!!
thanks for your time/ help!!
dan
I am no expert on VW vans but there are a couple of things to consider. The t1 & t2 might have problems with rust, suspension rubbers, brake systems but they are mechanically very simple! The newer ones will need less maintenance but if something goes wrong it may be technically more difficult to fix.
Personally I would get an old one then spend 6 months replacing brakes (including hydralics), suspension bushes and dampers, replace electrics including loom, then refurb the engine/gearbox. OK so this will cost you but then you should have a reliable van that you understand inside out and back to front. You should also be able to get an lod one that you don't have to pay road tax on Not that the early ones are going to be cheap!!!
Saw what I think was a brand new t2 (Brazillian I assume) for sale at Peterborough show about £35K I think!!!

Hello Dan
Sorry you didn't get too many replies but it is a very difficult problem to help someone make a decision on such a wide choice. When I was looking for a vehicle about 7 years ago I knew absolutley nothing about campervans or motor homes at all - except that I wanted one! I stumbled across this website and have been on here ever since
We made the mistake of buying a MH that was too big for our needs and it barely left the drive so we sold it. After a while we narrowed our choice down to campervans and bought lots of magazines, looked on websites, trawled around dealers and asked lots of questions............we eventually knew what we wanted. We then had the touble of getting it We now own a 2006 VW Topaz (Autosleeper) and it is pretty much perfect for us.
As we know nothing about mechanics or camping we do struggle even with the basics but getting a newer model has meant we dont have to worry too much (finger crossed) about any major problems. We have her serviced regularly at a local VW garage and they have been very good. The van is an automatic as that was one of the things on our wish list (which made it more difficult to find) but it makes the van very car like to drive
My advice would be to make a list of what you most want/need from your van and then do a search on the internet for models that most match you list. We also had a toilet/shower on our list and these are rare in small camper vans so our list of available vans shrank quite a bit.
There is a VW van owners website - sorry can't think of name of it at moment but they are real enthusiasts and may be able to point you in the right direction or offer some more help.
Good luck with your search and please let us know how it turns out.
Maura.
