I use the GT sim card when wandering round Europe – it means the kids can call me within their normal ‘free’ minutes and it costs me a lot less to receive the call than on my normal tariff.

Anyway, they only recently (9th May) took a further €25 from my account (tho I thought I’d stopped the auto debit when my credit went below €10).

This morning when I tried to phone Tesco Home Insurance the following happened:
1. Dial Tesco’s number
2. “Call not allowed” displayed
3. “Wait” displayed
4. “Tesco calling” displayed
5. I press to answer
6. “Requesting call” displayed (this is how it normally happens – they call me and when I answer, they then connect to the other person)
7. “The subscriber is unavailable to take your call at the moment” in a very American voice so I assume she’s referring to GT rather than to Tesco
8. The line then goes dead.

Have GT gone bust?

The website is still up and running. I could try customer services for you?

That would be great Andysam - thank you! I can't even use the Skype phone as the connection is so bad - or my computer is!

Just spoken with customer services. The company is trading and doing well!

The directions I had were to ensure that in your phone the SIM settings are set to "3" (apparently there are 5 of them) and to ignore any handset messages.

I don't know if this helps Idea

Oh dear, I've no idea what that means!! I wasn't aware of using any particular settings or, if I ever was, I've forgotten!

Can't remember when I last used the phone to call out but it wasn't that long ago and I haven't changed anything - to my knowledge!

Have you any idea what they're talking about?

Thanks for your help.

Roughly. In your phone settings you will have "SIM settings" go into those and select option 3 or however your particular phone works!

Aha - found it under Menu > Services > GT-Mode > Settings > and discovered mine had set itself to Mode 5 when it needs to be mode 3.

Many thanks for your help, Andysam!

Just in case anyone who has the same problem reads this:

I found setting the mode to 3 didn't help - as soon as I tried to make a call it reset itself to 5 automatically and I couldn't get through.

Customer Services helped by telling me to dial as follows:

*126*44(number)#

That worked. Whether I have to do this every time or not remains to be seen. Apparently if that combo hadn't worked they could have tried a different one.

But I'm happy - got the insurance for more or less what I paid last year (albeit having accepted an excess where last yr I'd none). Their first quote was almost 65% rise!! It certainly pays to ask!
