Hi

We have two 80 watt solar panels on the roof of our motorhome. My question is, in full sunshine how long would the panels take to charge an 85 amp hour gel battery if it was virtually flat?

Hi Jeangeanie,

Lots of influencing factors.
For a start, panels with have a limited output, probably about 4amps. The controller will not normally take the two 4 amps and put 8 in your battery. But it would be fair to expect 7 amp.

I use 2 x 135watt solars, the most I have ever seen is 14 amps output.

At 8 amps you would be charged or close to, in the day

If it was virtually flat the charger might not work. The battery would look like a dead short circuit to the controller and I expect that it would shut down. It is not a good idea to go below 11.5V and even then get it charged up asap or the battery will sulphate.
