I have a 1994 Globetrotter and when I'm on hook up the battery charges well, but according to the gauge on the dash it continues charging right up into the red.
Now as the leisure battery gauge is the only one that actually works at all, I'm perfectly prepared to believe that the gauge is malfunctioning, but also slightly worried that the charger might be cooking my battery!
I've located the red fuse button on the side of the charger (it's the A501 model according to the German photocopied manual I have) and given it a quick depress, whereupon it pops back out again on its spring. It doesn't seem like it's meant to stay flush with the side of the charger.
I've taken the Calira unit out of the dash in the hope of finding loose wires or dirty connections, but all that wasn't ok was in a sealed unit. Same with the charger.
So, after that long-winded preamble:
1) Should I be worried about over-charging? I currently switch off the ECU when we reach the top end of the green section to prevent it going further. Could I leave it safely on?
2) Can I do anything about this that doesn't entail spending heaps on a new Calira unit or charger?
3) Should I start saving for a new motorhome?

Hi Steve,
Is your battery bubbling and getting hot?
If it is then the chances are is that your battery has a duff cell and as result never reaches the voltage that tells the charger to stop.
Ok, now been on hook up for an hour or so, and gauge is reading about 14.5 in the red.
Battery is still just as cool as ever, but when I put my ear to it I can hear fizzing/bubbling. Doesn't sound like a boiling kettle, more like an alka seltzer.
Ideas, anyone?
Steve

Hi Steve,
If a normal battery is charging in normal conditions then it will fizz. That's what batteries do when they are charging.
If it's not getting hot then all sound fine.
