Hi. My first post so bear with me.
I've just traded my old Hymer for a new Hobby. Although having a reversing camera it has no rear visibility and the wing mirrors on the Transit give poor rear visibility. I was wondering if anyone knows of the best way to fit a second camera to give rear view driving. Do I need to run extra cables or is it possible to use the same cable for both cameras? Can a twin or tilting lens camera replace the reversing camera using the same cable?
I suppose you can tell that I don't want to have to route new cables as there may be no easy route.
I found This Device When coming up with ideas for a reversing/rear view camera system for our MH. We also have an existing reversing camera and poor rear visibility.
In forward gear you get the rear view camera image, select reverse gear and the device switches over to the reversing camera. It would be mounted at ther back and needs a connection to your reversing lights (or equivalent).
I'm sure there are other ways of doing it, some more specific to your MH.
Thanks JC I'll check it out. It looks like it does what I want if I can hide the equipment, maybe in a rear overhead locker with cables fed out to the camera(s)

Hi folkranger, not sure what the actual problem is here, is it seeing what is happening at the rear and only the rear, or being able to see clearly down the side to the rear and beyond, i.e. a camera instead of a rear view mirror? If it is just the former then the above answer sounds like it is what you are looking for. If the later then have you considered side mounted rear view cameras? My MH has these when driving the monitor shows what is happening at the rear, when the left hand indicator is activated the monitor displays the view from the left camera, a clear clean view right down the side. Likewise when the right hand indicator is used, view from the right hand camera and so on, the monitor has a selection switch from which you can toggle between them all. The MH came with these fitted and I would suggest it maybe a dealer install if you are not confident, but worth considering. Being honest I saw it as a pure gimmick (toy) but would not be without it now, if thinking down this line have the rear camera replaced with a tilting one at the same time. Note there are still rear view mirrors required by law, and I have seen some rear view cameras actually mounted in the mirrors as well.

Although the view down the sides is pretty poor, I really want to see behind as if I had a mirror when driving. I like to see a good clear road behind before pulling out to overtake. My question was aimed at seeing whether this could be done without rewiring. thanks for your input
I would think Jumbo's suggestion is the one to go for.
My completely non-expert knowledge comes from when our switch box gave up the ghost. Rather than drive all the way to Taunton, Eddie (VanBitz) kindly sent me a new one and told me how to find and replace the busted one.
As Eddie explained it to me, the box responds to an input signal which tells it which camera image to show on the screen.
On ours there is a little button on the monitor that switches from one to the other, but (with suitable expert advice) I can't think it would be too difficult for you to install a rocker switch (or similar) to do the same job.
Only theoretical information and moral support I'm afraid, but I think it is definitely do-able.

Hi Folkranger, understand your issue now, seems the above (Jumbocrusier) solution will be what you are looking for. The other week I saw an Autotrail Chieftain with what maybe something like your solution, it has a very neat camera mounted above the offside light cluster with I assume 100% rearward vision, and the standard camera mounted at the top. I presume this set up had something like the above (or even VanBitz), the new camera was the prime vision and when reverse was selected the standard one came into play. My only concern is you would need to have practice with this combination as I fear it may increase your blind spot.

Someone sent me a much cheaper alternative that really worked but it was too simple for me to work out by myself.
Tilt the camera up a bit. No! Perhaps I phrased it wrongly... loosen the screws that fix the camera angle, move it up a bit and you can see below and behind in one go. No! Sounds too simple.
I really did not work this out and had to be told.

Hi Folkranger – just been out with the dogs, when the lightening struck – forgot to mention one major thing, is your camera and monitor an integrated unit, that is to say do you have audio as well as video? Is the Camera fed its power from the monitor? If yes to either or both of these then you have an integrated solution (and I suspect it maybe) where the cable from the monitor is carrying the 12volt supply to the camera, as well as the video signals and one way audio, if this is the case then you will need to know what you are doing to breakdown the cable and correctly select the video channel and pull it out to and split it to operate two cameras without damaging the other services.
Another idea has come to mind whilst reading Roasalan’s post, this is a long shot, but the camera on the back of my current MH (and both the previous ones) has a slight offset to the kerb line, that is you can see slightly more of the near side than you can the offside, and on the rear of the monitor there are two switches, one reverses the image, this you need so it looks like you are looking through a mirror, the other switches the offset from left to right (kerb to road) – intended for international driving, i.e. switch the offset to show more towards the kerb when driving on the right-hand side of the road. If you have this option then try switching across and re angle the camera up slightly to have a more clear view of the road behind, as I say a long shot – but may help!
The really simple solution but not what you want to do is maybe a second camera in or near the offside light cluster and run a new cable to a second monitor.

I'm not sure why you suggest a camera down by the light cluster. I probably didn't make myself clear. I assume a second camera at the top, centre, rear but not angled down would give the rear vision I need. The unit first mentioned would probably give the switching I need to allow both cameras to use the same cable. I now need to see if my eclipse radi/tom tom device can accept both signals.
