My wife and I along with our faithfull dog "Jet" are embarking on our first foreign trip. We are planning to travel to southern Portugal in a few weeks time, roughly via Calais, Bordeaux and Salamanca. I would appreciate any info on any Aires in France and camp sites in Spain and Portugal where there is also good bird watching nearby, preferably near the coast or a lake or river.

Cheers Skippy.

Charente Maritime area (La Rochelle etc) is excellent for migrating birds in the right season and has plenty of aires. Ile d'Oleron has lots of aires and birds. (Look at the Aires website and look for Departement 16)

South of Bordeaux there is the Landes area. Once again, plenty of aires. Not that good for birdwatching but around the Basin d'Arcachon ther are lots of wading birds etc and some good aires. Once again, look at the aires website.

We can recommend the aire at Biscarosse Plage - Departement 40. By the side of a lake.

St Eulalie en bourne (same departement) s another lakeside aire. Also worth visiting near there is Vieux Boucau. Not so good for birdwatching but our dog loves it!

Thanks to Andyanghy for the above info. I had hoped for someone to also recommend some good birdwatching sites in Portugal.

Thanks Skippy
