Hi all.....just read the June issue of CC magazine featuring the design and drive section of some 50 motor homes. My interest focused on the new Concorde Charisma on the 6 ton Iveco chassis, which I have admired but always felt disappointed that the Mercedes base was no longer available at that weight hence the wider use of the Iveco now under several larger motor homes (Concorde,RS, Cathargo etc). The outcome from the CC test confirms what I suspected, that the chassis has a commercial feel and the pre-select gearbox seems to fall short of a true fluid drive auto. gearbox as fitted in our current Mercedes 616 which I find to be a really refined smooth drive........Crindle.

I agree, we test drove a Carthago Liner last year after seeing it at the NEC. 3litre 4 cyclinder, sounded more like a tractor, but the whole thing was a disappointment for£200,000, chassis nowhere near as good as our Merc 515 Frankia

Have driven and owned more than one Iveco van and have found them to be reliable but very agricultral - noisy and slow - compared to other vans. Sad

Definitely wouldn't be my choice of vehicle.

I understand that Hymer have added some more models to their B class Starline range all on Mercs so possibly a move back in that direction.

I talked to Hymer UK and they said NO I dont think we will bother importing those they are a bit more expensive being on the Merc, OK then be like that.

Hi all

We have a N & B Flair on the Iveco. We've fulltimed in it for the last three years covering a big chunk of Europe and working on three campsites.

We've never found it to be a problem, reliable, smooth and reasonably quick for a six ton vehicle, but then I never expected a chassis lugging my home around to have the agility or performance of a car.

Good egg all round really

John

p.s Not too bad on fuel either.

There is a new Mercedes 6 Ton Chassis available. It is a rear wheel drive double rear axle (Dare I call it a Tag?). It will not be the twin rear wheel like the old Sprinter 616, more like the bigger Fiats.

It is available with the Torque Converter Gearbox and the V6 3 Litre Euro V engine. Will be available as a 616CDi or a 619CDi.

Pilote Group Have exclusive rights to the 6 Ton Merc for a short period.

I would imagine that after that, their will be a few Manufacturers who take it up and start to build on it.

The Routemaster wasn't a pre-select Cabby. It was a semi-auto / auto. i.e. you could change gear manually in semi-auto mode or just stick it in top and let it do it's own thing although I am not sure that they all had the 'auto' option; not all of those that I drove did but they may have been 'broken'..... the Routemaster's predecessor, the RT, did have a pre-select as did many other 'London' buses.............. what does this have to do with Ivecos?....... nothing at all, sorry folks. Smile

I doubt it! I have had a build on a Merc chassis on order now for 9 months and Mercedes have again failed to deliver as they promised. Their word seems to count for nothing and I am now considering a build on an Iveco which the builder already has.

Jede as a mater of interest what are you getting to the gallon?

Mercedes may Possibly be making sure it works right first time. Not point in shoving something down the production line to end up with problems like Fiat have!.

When Mercedes had an issue with the driveshaft gear on the first Mercedes-Alko, they halted production until a new, redesigned box was available.

Better than the wait and see approach. That is, send what they have built out with the old drive gear. Then of it fails within the warranty - replace it then.

I would wait patiently.
