I am new to the world of Domes and freesat, I have just had a Glomex dome fitted, receiver is from my Aldi set up, badged silver crest, all working Ok, except for one thing, after a while the sound becomes intermittent, OK 1 minute then it will start to miss sentences, you can see the picture and the actors mouths moving but no sound, then it cuts back in again and so it goes on, once it has started to happen, it might be 5-10 minutes before it happens again, and never for more than 30-45 seconds, I have tried a different scart lead, same happens, the TV is fine on normal set up, Freeview etc, so I guess no problem there,
This past week I have been near Salisbury, with a clear view of the sky, the picture quality is fantastic, any ideas anyone?
Just one small clarification, if you have a Silvercrest receiver from Aldi it is actually what is known as "Free to Air" not "Freesat".
"Freesat (TM)" is a proprietary system owned by (I think) ITV and BBC that uses a selection from the Free to Air channels on Astra 28.2E not all of them and packages them through a specific programme guide.
The Aldi receiver will work with and receive signals from any satellite a "Freesat (TM)" will only work with and receive signals from Astra 28.2E and only if it can lock onto the right "home" channel so it can receive it's instructions and EPG.
I'm sure that's pretty much how it is, but I'm sure one of the experts will correct anything I've got wrong.
Thanks Steve and Stanner, when I had the dome fitted I was told the Aldi receiver was freesat and would be OK to use, I have checked the Freesat listings website and I seem to have most of the chanels on show there, chanel 4 & 5 were missing, along with a few others, although I did have around 7 Chanel 4+1's.
Hi
Bit confused by this
Silver crest is a company owned by Lidl
Silver crest sat box is Manufactured by Comag.
All free to air channels are available you need to do re scan.
Steles.
If you want to receive the freesat (note no capital letter) service as per the freesat website then you will need to buy a registered freesat box, which the Aldi and many similar boxes are not. As Stanner has stated, they are Free to Air. There are several genuine freesat boxes, which are 12V and all of these are suitable for your setup.
Gerry
Thinking back you are correct, I bought my suitcase set from Lidl not Aldi.
I have rescanned several times this week, but with no luck on the chanel 4 or 5, can get 4+1 though, looking at the list in the roadpro mag I am missing a few chanels, As I bought the set around 4-5 years ago, could it be out of date so to speak?
One of my neighbours receivers had several different satellite settings, North/South etc and my box has only a preset station, will this hinder me, what about the loss of sound, which was my main concern, any ideas there?
It makes no difference where your box came from, it is still not a freesat box. Whilst most FTA channels are available to generic boxes, some are particularly tied to the service providers. If you want all of the freesat channels in the correct order and with the correct programme guide, you will need to buy a genuine freesat box.
They are no more expensive than the generic boxes and are guaranteed to have gone through more rigorous testing.

Thanks Gerry, I was just clearing up Steles question re Aldi and Lidl badged items.
I thought this would be as simple as plug and play, but obviuosly not that easy, there seems to be too much conflicting information around, In the roadpro magazine, (and this is where I am being confused) it states that a freesat receiver is restricted to only freesat programmes (understand that) but a FTA receiver can receive freesat and FTA programmes, is this correct, if not, which chanels are available to freesat that are not on FTA?
my box has only a preset station, will this hinder me, what about the loss of sound, which was my main concern, any ideas there?
Sorry for so many questions.
Terry
Terry your loss of channels could be your presets are out of date i.e the frequencies of the missing channels have changed or they were incorrectly set in the first place. You should be able to adjust the presets. This might also be your problem with loss of sound? Usually loss of sound occasionally can be attributed to a marginal signal but the symptoms do not exactly match what I would expect in that you state you still have an excellent picture.
