Just got back from a nice 10 day tour of the very south of Italy. Before leaving I made myself this nefty and cheap antenna setup. I used a basic residential antenna and attached it to an extend-able painters pole which was then attached to my bike rack. So it works great at home on the digital terrestrial system. Problem was that I could never get a good signal in the south. One problem was that many areas are still using analog, which was often weak and or needing high antennas or blocked by buildings. Next problem was needing to change from horizontal to vertical for the digital system, as well as often having the signal blocked by buildings.

Conclusion was as mentioned often here the only reliable system is satellite
