Hi everyone,
We are caravaners wanting to change to an automatic motorhome that is plated 3500kg, and must be automatic with a fixed bed over garage if possible. Have a 2010 Sterling Eccles Ruby caravan with movers. Willing to exchange for motorhome with cash adjustment.
I'll likely get shot down for this, but I'd make sure it's a true automatic not one of these fancy manual boxes with bits fastened onto it.
Reason being an automatic box is designed to work as a auto, manual box is not, I know from personal experience 2 people who drive vans with the non auto autoboxes, and they are very weak. and parts (because of rarity) are very expensive and main dealer only most garages won't repair them so you need a dealer or a specialist.
I assume it's medical the need for a slush box, otherwise go manual, it's not like you're in town all day.
Anyway good luck finding the right van combination.
A robotised manual gearbox (sprintshift etc) has two advantages, economy of a manual with the ease of an epicyclic automatic (slush box as you refer to them)
Such gearboxes have been in use in buses, coaches, lorries etc for many years now. yes some suffer from problems but then so do full autoboxes (which are far MORE complex!)
I run a Sprintshift and it is a pleasure to drive and is problem free. yes it MIGHT malfunction but there again it might not !!!
My sprintshift does not suffer from clutch judder like "certain" other makes !!!
Unless I am mistaken this clutch judder problem is vastly more common than sprintshift boxes going wrong . How many F*** owners have had to have their wrecked gearboxes replaced at their expense due to an uncorrected known design fault???
No-one has seen the need to start a (very lengthy) thread on MHF to assist (a LOT of owners) with Sprintshift gearbox problems have they???? Perhaps thats because they are not that much of a problem??
So lets put these Sprintshift gearbox "problems" into perspective against the above please !!
It's down to personal preference at the end of the day. On the one hand we have unhappy stories about robotised manuals on the other hand clutch judder etc etc. In the middle there are thousands of satisfed users of either/both. They just haven't got around to posting their experiences on a forum since they have no reason to do so...............
When I got my new van, if I had the choice between manual 3 litre (which I have) or a comformatic "auto", I would have unhesitatingly chosen the latter.
Enjoy your auto gearbox MH - whether it is a true Merc auto (oh yes please, I have the same box in my car) or a sprintshift/comformatic. You'll probably be happy with either
Ford Transits can be 'real' automatics as my previous 'smiley face' Autosleeper was.
It worked fine but did lack a bit of grunt uphill.

You are entitled to your opinion based on your experiences Mr Plodd, mine is based on the experience of others, the idea of the sprint shift is basically a good one, but if it's so good and efficient I wonder why there are so few of them in the states where they love autos.
Not looking for a row, my aim is to include the negatives, I have driven a sprint shift and whilst working they're OK, but I'd much rather have one or the other IMHO
Well ive got a Sprintshift and i can tell you from many thousands of trouble free miles its brilliant, I can also tell you i have a mate who maitains a hire fleet of 90 sprinters and they have had no trouble with sprintshifts except ones with lunar, And i mean lunar, mileage.
