According to info received from the Caravan Club most filling stations on the continent are closed on Sundays, is this the case? We will be arriving at Calais early Sunday morning, hoping to get our heads down for a few hours before filling up with fuel and then heading south. Would we be better filling up at Dover? Also I have read that a lot of filling stations are now unmanned and only take French credit cards!
Any adivce on the above would be appreciated.
The ones on the autoroutes are open and if you are heading S on the A16 there is a fuel stop about half way to Boulogne.
Even filling on the autoroute is cheaper than the UK.
If you want to travel with confidence then yes, fill up in the UK., but not too full. The difference between one tank at French prices and one tank at UK prices will make over a holiday is infinitesimal compared with the total cost of the holiday.
Sorry Skippy, can't give you any info on the above but sure someone will.
Just saw that you are from Skipton, I was born and bred there, great place and area.
Hope you have a great trip - safe journey and all the best for 2006

Skippy,
If you use the N routes in France you will usually find at least one service station open until about 8 pm in towns and the larger villages on a sunday.
The problem with widespread Sunday availability for fuel in France can also apply to Saturday afternoons, and religious holidays, [watch out for Thursdays in May / June].

Hi Skippy,As said before All services on Autoroutes are open 24/7 all year,I also think the Elf station on your way to the A16 and A26 is open on Sundays,if you take either the A16 or A26 you will find a services within 10 miles at Aire De Deux Caps on the A16 and one 15 to 20 miles A26 towards Paris, leave England with Half tank and youl have no trouble,I live about 6 or so miles from Skipton and My Brother has an Architectural Practice in the town, cheers,Gerry.
I have found that on Sundays some supermarket filling stations are open up to 12 Oclock. but if you are desperate just pull in at any supermarket and wait for a French person to pull in to fill up and they will always use their cards in exchange for the same amount in Euros. Of course there are the normal filling stations available up to about 6-7 pm but some of these may be closed for lunch between 12 and 2.30. If you are short of fuel at Calais there is a service station in the tunnel complex,
Colin
Skippy, after leaving docks come off at Junction 3 and take 3rd exit into truck stop, it's open 24/7 you cant miss it as there are hundreds of trucks parked there, it is also the route to the cheap booze warehouses ( eastenders ect.)
Use the pumps on the left of forecourt shop as the right ones are large nozzels for trucks and are difficult to fill normal tank fillers.
Have a safe trip.
Hi to Skiptonites Gerry and Chris. We are departing Calais via the A16, so the info from Gillian and Chris is great. Thanks to all who replied, the first foriegn trip is no doubt a bit of a worry for everyone, but with a site like this you have someone to turn to for help.
